Dead Rising 3 Apocalypse Edition Review

Back to the Lost

Dead Rising 3 Apocalypse Edition Review Screenshot

HIGH Spending another 20 hours in the finest zombie-killing simulator ever.

LOW Even at low detail settings on a good PC, the framerate chugs during heavy action.

WTF The SmartGlass features were removed and replaced with... nothing!

Dead Rising 3 Second Opinion

Par for the corpse

HIGH Killing 70 zombies in one strike with a propane tank strapped to a traffic light

LOW Forced environmental barriers that arbitrarily preserve story and difficulty integrity.

WTF Where's the jetpack

Dead Rising 3 Second Opinion

It's the End of the World as We Know It

Dead Rising 3 Review Screenshot

HIGH Wading into a sea of zombies and slaughtering them all with one of the game's ridiculous combo weapons.

LOW Traveling all the way across the map to complete a quest, then being told I need to travel back again to get back to the quest-giver.

WTF Who makes zombie porn during the apocalypse?

The Politically-Topical Dead

HIGH Finding out why there were only six Deadly Psychopaths.

LOW The wonky driving physics that makes cars flip at the drop of a hat.

WTF I had so much fun running over zombies with a motorcycle/steamroller hybrid that it took me ten hours to notice that it also had twin flamethrowers.

Dead Rising 2: Case West Second Opinion

Duct Tape and a Camera

HIGH Frank West. What else needs to be said?

LOW A few of the Achievements are too tedious to bother with.

WTF It's a locked facility and I've killed thousands... When does the place empty out?

Amnesia woes, Case West fumbles and Preacher rocks

The action and structure of The Adventures of Captain Becky is actually a little above-par as far as some of these indie games go, though that's not to say it's fabulous. No, I think the real draw here is that Becky is rendered in quasi-Anime "hot girl" fashion, and each level awards her a new outfit provided that the player makes sufficient progress. Taking this fanboy appeal one step further, the game offers a shockingly-detailed character editor where the player can modify Becky's appearance. I can't say that the graphics are good enough to sell the package, but the level of sophistication that was attempted in this mode alone far surpasses most of what I've seen on XBLI.

Frank West: He's Covered Wars, Ya Know...

Dead Rising 2: Case West Screenshot

HIGH Getting to run around with Frank West killing zombies and guards.

LOW The fact that the only way I can play as Frank is by joining in someone else's multiplayer game.

WTF Why does Frank suddenly look like the love child of Dan Aykroyd and Mickey Rourke?

Dead Rising 2 Review

This Corpse Needs a Little Freshening Up

HIGH Watching all the cut-scenes with my character in a snappy tuxedo.

LOW Trying to mix life-giving drinks at a bar while getting mobbed by zombies.

WTF The amount of stuff lifted straight out of the first Dead Rising.

Done with Dead Rising 2 and a Castlevania query

After rolling credits for both the main campaign and the Overtime mode that comes after, my thoughts about the game are basically the same—it's a note-for-note reproduction of the original with a much gentler difficulty curve and a create-a-weapon mechanic that doesn't feel like a good fit for the schedule-oriented structure of play.

Dead Rising 2 and Sonic/psych bits

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero Review

After an extended delay, I finally got my hands on a copy of Dead Rising 2. I had a fairly hot-and-cold relationship with the first one, but the recent Case Zero DLC episode got me fired up and I've been pretty eager to see what's going on with Chuck Greene in Fortune City. Unfortunately, it's not really all that much.
