Unlimited Saga is a two-edged sword. It eschews story for gameplay, convention for innovation. In a lot of ways, it succeeds in not being 'another Final Fantasy' like all the rest.

The primary gripe I have with Unlimited Saga is accessibility. The manual sucks; I literally had to read forums of information to understand what was going on. However, once you 'get' it, it's quite enjoyable, at least for a time.

As I said, the story isn't really the focus of the game. The focus is the difficulty, the options (and occasionally, lack of options) you have to work with, and the joy of completing a huge monstrosity of a game. There are times where it can be tedious. However, if you enjoy building up characters and a game that will easily last you more than 100+ hours... it's worth a rental. Just read the forums on GameFAQs and ... expect something a little different.
