Jason 7.5 Rating
I have mixed feelings on this game. I wasn't able to complete it, and I question if you will too -- there is just so much game here. And although the idea of continuity through three games (2.5 if you consider Arc I short) is nice, having all three at the same time is too much. I wandered away from Arc II because I was just having too much Arc. But the game itself was fun to play, and I enjoy the straightforward strategy-RPG.
I really like the game music, although I wish there was more of it.
The story is pretty standard RPG stuff, but somehow I didn't mind. People make too big a deal about these story conventions sometimes. In comparison, recently picking up Albert Odyssey -- a Working Designs localization for a Saturn game originally published around the same time as Arc -- just bored me to tears. Arc stayed somehow endearing. And seeing my heroes from Arc I show up in Arc II was a great moment. (The memory saves transfer, but I'm not sure what exactly is transferred.)
In short, I think if you like Playstation-era strategy RPGs, this game is worth trying out. It's not Final Fantasy Tactics, but I liked it much better than Saiyuki. And you are getting a whole lot of game in one, plus a making-of disc, which is great if you really like the behind-the-scenes info.
