Mortal Kombat and The Third Birthday's unbelievably bad writing

Mortal Kombat Screenshot

I haven't had a ton of time to play games lately, but what little time I have has been spent with the new Mortal Kombat. After the long, unbroken string of utterly craptastic sequels put forth by the series, it's extremely gratifying to see the franchise finally get its act together and reboot itself into respectability.

Lord of Arcana Review

A (Very) Poor Man's Monster Hunter

Lord of Arcana Screenshot

HIGH The game didn't crash once on me in 40+ hours of playtime. Hurray!

LOW Tedious boss fights that feel like they're more based on luck and memorization than any kind of skill.

WTF The game doesn't have cooperative online—it is still 2011, right?

Portal 2, MHFU, The Kingdom and Doctor Who

Portal 2 Screenshot

So I've been playing Portal 2 for the past couple of days. I won't spoil anything since I know that most people are only getting their copy just now, but I will say that so far (I would estimate I'm about 3/4ths of the way through) it's pretty much what I expected.

Gods Eater Burst Review

Smaller. Faster. Better?

Gods Eater Burst Screenshot

HIGH The rapid-switching gun/shield/sword/mouth mechanic is brilliant.

LOW All clothing in the game is only cosmetic; there are no effects or bonuses.

WTF Why is it called "Gods"? Every character in the game says it without the S.

Consoleation: The not so noble intentions of abandoning instruction manuals

Fight Night Champion Screenshot

I came out pretty strong on Twitter recently, decrying the loss of instruction manuals as publishers such as Ubisoft and EA Sports have made moves to abolish print manuals in exchange for digital manuals that can be found as extra content on the game disc. While publishers are reasoning that eliminating such manuals is better for the environment, it seems evident to me that there are more significant factors at work here.

Gods Eater Burst an acquired taste

Gods Eater Burst Screenshot

I'm still working my way through Gods Eater Burst on PlayStation Portable. I haven't mentioned it here at the blog yet, but it's basically a "lite" version of Monster Hunter with a strong anime slant and combat that runs a hell of a lot faster than it does in Capcom's game—not that the speed itself is necessarily a good thing. (Spazzy alert: GO!!!)

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Review

Three Hundred Hours and Still Going Strong

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Screenshot

HIGH A skin-of-my-teeth victory after a knock-down, drag-out, forty-five minute battle.

LOW Struggling to survive the nasty dual Tigrex mission... Twice.

WTF Watching my Felyne companion get the game-winning hit in on the last boss.

The Dragon Age II Podcast, Crysis 2, MHFU continues and a Keene book

Crysis 2 Screenshot

An unsolicited copy of Crysis 2 showed up at my door today (always a pleasant surprise when that happens) and I put about an hour into it. I've heard that the multiplayer demo available wasn't too well-received, but I never got around to checking it out and I never played the first Crysis either, so I was coming into the game basically as fresh as possible. First impressions of the campaign? Very positive.

PAX East 2011 Roundup

Hunted: The Demon's Forge Screenshot

I attended PAX East, checking out upcoming games and meeting great people. That last one was a bit more difficult thanks to the enormous size of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC), but that size made panels much easier to get into and allowed for an expanded and much nicer exposition floor. In case you weren't there, here are some impressions.

Zettai Hero Project: Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman Review

It Will be One Huge, EPIC Battle

Zettai Hero Project: Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman Screenshot

HIGH The soundtrack (with vocals!) in the New Hero Mastery Dungeon.

LOW Saving before the boss of the aforementioned dungeon, dying, resetting, getting the heck out of Dodge, finding out I still lost all my stuff anyway (including $100,000), and having no one to blame but myself.

WTF Whatever comes out of Pirohiko's mouth that isn't a platitude or a pep talk. And even some of those.
