Things I saw at the Boston Festival of Indie Games

Candlelight Screenshot

A while back I took a quick swing up to MIT to check out the Boston Festival of Indie Games, which was a neat little show I really enjoyed visiting. Of course, as an indie show it had its fair share of games that needed tons of work or were just hopeless, but I got my hands on several really neat games, too.

Defiance, Mighty Switch Force and Sakura Samurai

So although I completed the review for Defiance a while ago, it's a pretty big game apart from it being an MMO. I didn't have time to complete the campaign when I was submitting the review, but now that I've had a little bit of free time in my schedule, I was eager to get back to it. I'm happy to say that I finally completed the campaign, and that the game is 100% solo-able. In fact, it's maybe a little too solo...

Lost Planet 3 Review

A Family Man, a Long Way from Home

HIGH Realizing the game wasn't going to warp my mech up a mountain.

LOW The unclear, frustrating first use of the claw winch.

WTF "Stay alive?" Nooooo, the actual objective is "fix miniguns."

Outlast Review

LOW Sometimes it's unclear where to go.

WTF There's a distinct lack of clothes going around.

Consoleation: The death of the College Football video game

Bill Walsh College Football Image

Pretty interesting—and sad—news coming out of Electronic Arts as the company has thrown in the towel on its college football video games after a twenty-year run that began back in 1993 as Bill Walsh College Football.

Race the Sun review

Mors Certa, Hora Incerta

HIGH Safely navigating an insane gauntlet of death at terrifying speeds.

LOW Seeing many of the same obstacles reappear two days on the trot.

WTF Why would anyone partake in this venture? Nobody survives it!

Rogue Legacy Review

Try, Try Again, Again

HIGH Finally beating Herodotus after dodging the slimes for what felt like hours.

LOW Setting up a perfect set of runes and equipment and then forgetting to talk to the architect before entering the castle.

WTF My hero had IBS, so I ended up farting in the final boss's face right before he died.

DuckTales: Remastered Review

Not Pony Tails or Cotton Tails But...

DuckTales: Remastered Screenshot

HIGH Diving into the Money Bin!

LOW Managing to glitch the game so that I would have to exit and restart a stage manually, over and over again.

WTF How does Ms. Beakley keep getting into these hidden places before Scrooge and the gang?

Rise of Venice Preview

Rise of Venice Screenshot

Should I invest in expanding my warehouses, or should I increase the number of ships in my merchant fleet? Do I sell this massive pile of lumber now, or wait for a disaster to drive up prices when people need to rebuild their homes? How much would it take to bribe a city leader instead of following the official channels to establish a branch in a new city? These are the questions asked in the upcoming Rise of Venice, the next trading sim from those behind Port Royale 3.

PAX Prime 2013 Report: Wrap-up

PAX Prime 2013 Logo

So, PAX Prime 2013 is now over—and man, what a terrible, sh*t-tastic way to end it. Although it wasn't my favorite PAX, there were definitely some high points like seeing people whom I would otherwise never run into, and getting the chance to play games that I had been looking forward to. Some good times there, for sure. However, things really ended on a sour note once I got home.
