Play Under Review - July 2002

Welcome to the debut of Play Under Review here at GameCritics. It’s a feature devoted entirely towards giving some critical attention to the world of sports games. Sports games are one of the most popular genres of games around, yet have never gotten their full share of attention.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (PC) – Review

It takes a particular kind of mindset to really enjoy a game like Morrowind. You really have to get what the designers are trying to do and understand why they avoid what seem like more obvious alternatives. Like the two previous games of the Elder Scrolls series, Morrowind has its sights set on one goal: to provide us, the players, with all the limitless possibility our finite little minds can comprehend.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Xbox) – Review

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, from developer Bethesda Softworks, often seems so much like a full days work that it's easy to forget its just a game.

Shadow Man 2econd Coming – Second Opinion

This new version of Shadow Man plays a lot like the old one—the graphics have been upgraded (the character models look a little more realistic, although they still look like first generation Playstation 2 graphics) and the core gameplay tweaked (theres a wider variety of weapons this time around); but those who played through the first game will find that 2econd Coming is very familiar, flaws and all.

Advance Wars – Review

Advance Wars is a meld of two differing strategy genres. First are the turn-based strategy games, like Civilization. Second are the real-time strategy (RTS) games like Warcraft. Like both genres, Advance Wars centers on the production of military units and battling your enemies. Unlike the god-games, there is nothing to manage aside from military units, and even their production is extremely simple. This is a straight-up military simulation, and it can be nice to concentrate on simply outsmarting your opponent rather than trying to figure out a research tree. Unlike Warcraft and other RTS games, Advance Wars moves along in a series of discrete turns, making for a more relaxing and contemplative experience than is possible when the main concern is scrambling to pump out troops and build up the base.

Tetris Worlds – Review

With practically every influential console titles origins in Japan and an equal amount of groundbreaking PC titles cranked out across the seas in America, I find it a bit surprising that one of the worlds best video games, Tetris, came from Russia. Still, despite its surprising point of origin, why look the horse in the mouth? Any way you slice it, Tetris easily ranks among the worlds best titles. Looking at it objectively, few games can match its accessibility; almost anyone able to pick it up and play within seconds.

Advance Wars – Consumer Guide

The ESRB reports that this game contains: Mild Violence
