Seattle restaurant review: Phuket

For our readers in the Seattle area, I wanted to say a few quick words on what is becoming my absolute favorite Thai restaurant, Phuket.

Located on Queen Anne Avenue half a block south of Mercer, it's a small, unassuming little place that never seems to be too busy, though I do see a number of people ordering takeout.

The usual greeter is very friendly, though I have to say that I am a little bit disappointed that the servers never come back to check on the food after they've brought it to the table. However, I have to say that this is one case where I don't think they actually have to...

I've tried several dishes, and each one is more delicious than the last.  Their Phad Thai is awesome, always fresh and hot, with a hearty amount of egg and meat. It leans towards the sweeter, tamarind side but it's never overdone.

The Panang curry is fantastic, the black pepper chicken never disappoints, and if you sit in the north side of the restaurant, you can watch the chef on the other side of the bar cooking while you wait.  It's been the same chef every time I've eaten there, and I'm glad because this guy knows what he's doing.

The only criticisms I have are that the portions of rice are on the smallish side, and that the servers never seemed quite aware of when I was ready for the bill to be brought to my table. Out of the five or six times I've been there so far, only once did they seem to get the hint.

In terms of Thai restaurants, those are pretty small complaints.  When I'm in the mood for Thai, Phuket is the kind of place that I go out of my way to eat at.  I've been all over the city looking for the best, but this one is tops. If any readers in the Seattle area try it out, I'd love to hear from you, or, if you have a place that you'd like to recommend, I'm always open for suggestions.

Can't say I've been here

Can't say I've been here before, but I love Thailand foods, particularly Phad Thai (although it had to be in meat substitite. I'm herbivorous :D).

How about their Tom Yum? Haven't you tried eating that?

speaking of foods, what are some good filipino foods to try? i'm not very knowledgeable about the cuisine, though we have several restaurants here. any suggestions?

Brad, If you're into sweet


If you're into sweet foods, try Bibingka, Kesong Puti, Puto, Puto Bumbong, Buko Pie, Suman, Ube Cake, Banana-Q (Banana Que ROCKS!), Turon, and Kamote-Q . I'm not sure if there's any of these available in the Philippine restaurants near you though, because these foods are considered "street foods". Just be warned that they're quite heavy and fatty; then again most Filipino foods are. I would advice that you wrap some of these foods to take home. Most of these can be eaten as snacks.

Definitely try halo-halo. It's a dessert with ice cream, milk, crushed ice and assorted confectioneries. Halo-halo is, IMO, the most essential Filipino food. Again, it's fatty.

For breakfast, as if they have this small bun called Pan De Sal. It's quite plain tasting, but it can be very tasty when prepared by a good chef. Best eaten while hot.

And for lunch and dinner, if you want to eat rice, be sure to try these viands: Kare-kare, Menudo, Langka, and Curry. If you don't want to eat rice, try Pancit Canton (it's a noodle).

And be sure to let me know what you think after you tried some of these, okay? ; )

Btw, I can also recommend Taiwan foods. But that's for some other time.

Phuket? Hmmm... I walk past

Phuket? Hmmm... I walk past that place on my way to Racha all the time and I usually just make a corny remark like... "Hey, do you want to ear there instead?" To which my wife says, "Where?". And I say, "Just "fuk it". And we laugh because I do it all the time. Of course, I know that's not how it's pronounced, but it's funny.

Never been inside though. Racha's lunch specials are hard to beat. I love the free soup and spring roll they give you just for sitting down, not to mention the spoonful of chai ice-cream and almond cookie after you're done.

Speaking of Phuket, though Brad, Uptown Espresso next door makes an awesome Caffe Mezzo. It's some sort of hybrid between a latte and an americano. About 80% americano with just a bit of foamed up milk on top. Awesome.

Yeah, i'm a fan of Uptown... i like their orange mocha, it's not called a Valencia but something else, though the name escapes me at the moment.

if you like Racha, i'm sure you'll like Phuket a lot better. i've had both, and Phuket is by far the tastier. granted, Racha does give you the freebies (lacking at Phuket) but the entrees are so good, i choose Phuket over Racha every time.
