Tapas Time!

Today was the day before my one-year wedding anniversary, so the wife and I went to a local restaurant and had a night out. We've both been working pretty hardcore hours lately, and some tasty food and drink in a brand-new setting was something we both needed to put a little spring back in our step.

We went to Tango, on the edge of Seattle's Capitol Hill district  at 1100 Pike. Neither one of us had ever been before, so that added a little spice. Trying new places and tasting new foods is something we both enjoy, and this place did not disappoint.

Neither of us is very experienced with tapas, so we tried a little bit of everything.  The first dish we ordered actually ended up being the tastiest; a mehdjool fig wrapped with broiled bacon and resting on a thin slice of eggplant. It may not sound very appetizing at first, but it was freakin' delicious.

Seriously. We ordered two more immediately after. Could have had another seven.

We also had some slices of white anchovy in a light vinaigrette (not nearly as fishy as one would expect), a roasted pepper stuffed with tuna and capers (probably the least impressive of the bunch, the flavor was quite light and unremarkable), and a bowl of citrus-marinated olives and some outstanding roasted almonds. Not too salty yet packing quite a spicy punch, those almonds were something I need to track down the recipe for.

Dessert was nice, a Brazil nut cake layered with semi-sweet chocolate (I'm not the biggest chocolate fan, so it was a little bit much for me), a teeny scoop of coffee ice cream, and a caramel mousse. The portions on desert were a little on the small side, but at that point I probably couldn't have eaten much more, so I wasn't too disappointed. 

We sat at the bar, and although we initially wanted a table (the house was packed), our seats actually ended up being perfect since we weren't too crowded and the bartender was attentive without being intrusive.

Overall, I'd have to say that it was a completely pleasurable experience and well worth the ulcer-inducing parking job I had to pull off in the small lot across the street... I think I had about an inch and a half of clearance between my car in the next, and I exited the vehicle by excluding over to the passenger side and squeezing out.  Just barely.

If you're a reader in Seattle or will be swinging up this way sometime soon, this critic gives Tango a must-eat recommendation.
