Game Description: Playing Boktai requires sunlight. The solar sensor responds to the player's environment and reflects the amount of solar energy (sunlight) in the game at real time. When there is strong sunlight, solar energy charges up quickly. When weak, it charges up slowly. Sunlight is required mainly to charge energy to the solar gun which is the player's only weapon, and to fight the boss at the Pile Driver. And during moments other than these, the sensor will detect solar energy, causing the game content to change. In Boktai, with the real time clock inside the cartridge, game contents change over time from daytime to nighttime, just like actual time in our world. The Undead that are active during the night stay quiet in the dungeon during the day.

A few minor exceptions aside, most role-playing games have been wedded to the fantasy genre. This is no doubt due in a large part to the format's origins in the pen and paper world of Dungeons & Dragons. Whether you're smashing orcs over the head in Neverwinter Nights or defeating some ugly monstrosity with a fire spell in any of the Final Fantasy games, the setting is the same (albeit with small alterations). Rest assured that if you're playing a role-playing game (RPG), you'll be lost in a world full of mages, fantastic beasts and people who have names like Wakka.

With the advent of new console technology, the potential exists for previously unseen ideas and experiences to be realized. So far, we've mostly been treated to the same concepts with better graphics and online connectivity, but those are just the obligatory first steps. With so much horsepower under the hood, it would be extremely shortsighted to avoid pushing videogames' very structure further. Looking at prime areas ripe for growth, something that seems quite logical (yet rarely implemented) is depth of customization.

Beyond this mocking, intentionally cheap and campy experience is a concise (though admittedly incomplete) cross-section of some of both the classic and the forgotten moments in Nintendo's videogame history, and a throwback to those beloved twitch-games of yore.
