Heroes of Might and Magic: Quest for the DragonBone Staff – Review

Heroes Of Might And Magic: Quest For The DragonBone Staff has got to be in the running for one of the longest game titles ever released. Ironically, for something with such a grandiose title, the latest release from 3DO Studios (created by New World Computing) didn't even hold my interest as long as it took me to say the whole name.

m glad Brad brought 3DO's existence into question because it saved me from doing so. But with that said, there isn't much for me to add to his review. All I can do is wonder aloud whether this utterly forgettable game would have been released—or even made—had it not had the "Heroes Of Might & Magic" name attached to it? My answer would be no.

Game Description: What-if scenarios are popular among strategy games. The intriguing historical alternative to Ring of Red is that the Japanese didn't surrender in 1945, and, after decades of fighting, mid-'60s Japan is split between nationalist, Soviet-, and American-backed forces. Now what if those forces had giant, gas-powered battle robots, armed with machine guns, rocket launchers, and field artillery pieces, supporting their infantries? Players will pilot the battle mechs through real-time battles that feature day and night cycles, thousands of attack squad combinations, and detailed controls.

Ring of Red – Review

Few things can be truly credited with changing our world, but the things that do are generally agreed upon in consensus across the world. Language is probably the biggest one. Others would certainly mention the wheel, medicine and electricity as extremely significant. However, I also believe that one thing which may not be mentioned quite as often as other notables would be war.

Front Mission 3 – Review

FM3, at its core, is a turn-based strategy game where tactics and control are concerned only as far as a squad of four soldiers rather then an army of thousands. What has always been a trademark of the Front Mission series (Parts 1 and 2 were never localized for the North American market) is that all the soldiers under a player's command pilot Japanese anime-styled combat robots known as Wanzers (pronounced Van-ser).

Game Description: Using a turn-based combat system; the player controls giant fighting robots called "wanzers" in order to fulfill mission objectives or to defeat foes in mechanical warafre. Robots can be continually upgraded by purchasing or scavenging new weapons/ armor/ computers/ ect. This game takes a new approach to increasing the depth of the game creating the Double Feature Scenario which allows the player to choose one of two completely different character viewpoint within the same general plot of the game.

Front Mission 3 – Second Opinion

This game really surprised me. I generally don't get too excited about turned-based RPGs (I lost interest about midway through Shining Force), but I couldn't stop playing FM3, and it's difficult to explain why. Like Chi, I have mixed feelings about the game. FM3 left me feeling short-changed on several occasions. And yet, this game managed to pull me in and keep me interested. I found myself addicted to the fun battle scenarios, and the story proved just compelling enough for me to keep plugging away at this futuristic RPG.

Advance Wars – Second Opinion

Much like Thom, Advance Wars reminds me of many games I've played in the past, but none on the PC. A couple of classic console names that come to mind are Military Madness and Shining Force, as well as more recent efforts like Vandal Hearts or even Final Fantasy Tactics to a certain extent. Replace the medieval fantasy characters with planes and tanks, and you're basically set.
