I know it's been said before, but it bears repeating: when it comes to videogames, World War II is the gift that just keeps on giving. It exists in a perfect middle ground where technology was just advanced enough to allow for interesting gameplay possibilities, but still primitive enough that individual humans were still an important part of the equation.

It isn't the solid gameplay, or the excellent creature design, or even the shiny graphics that make Lost Planet so special. No, the key element to Lost Planet's success is its absolutely perfect balance.

Game Description: In Lost Planet, human snow pirates navigate VS (Vital Suits) through hostile ice-covered environments, fighting against the indigenous Akrid creatures for the precious thermal energy they need to survive. For one such pilot named Wayne, death almost seemed imminent until he was fortunately rescued. However, he can only remember a few fragments of his past including the slaying of his father by the monstrous beings. Yet under the veil of ice, a devious plan has been set into motion for the termination of all Akrid and snow pirates alike. What really happened to Wayne? Who is plotting the destructive scheme? For anyone who plays a large number of videogames, there reaches a point where every genre has not only been explored, but each slight variation on it exhausted. When attempting to deride something they don't like, people will often say a variation of the phrase 'If you've played one (for example) first-person shooter (FPS), you've played them all.' While this isn't true, the slightly paraphrased version "If you've played twenty FPSs, you've played them all" actually kinda is.

Chromehounds is an unusual entry to the "big robot" genre.  Rather than being fast, flashy, or even very stylish, it's about teamwork. For once, the idea of victory for one man against an army is disregarded in favor of a humbler, more cooperative approach to futuristic mechanized warfare.
