Piloting

True to life: IL-2 Sturmovik Preview

by Steven Brown

IL-2 Sturmovik Preview

Flight games often trend toward one of two different styles. On one side are the fast-action, arcade-like mainstays such as Afterburner or Ace Combat where the impossibility of carrying over sixty missiles at once is shoved aside in favor of letting people blast enemies from the skies with impunity. On the other end are entries like Microsoft Flight Simulator. Seemingly overwhelming in their attention to detail, these types of games take pride in making sure every single aspect of piloting is covered.

Luftrausers Review

Rausing?

Luftrausers Review Screenshot

High The music kicking into high gear as the dreaded blimp pokes through the clouds.

Low Going from full health to stone dead in approximately four nanoseconds.

WTF Some of the unlockable color schemes are seemingly designed for the sole purpose of making eyeballs bleed.

Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut Review

Bullets In A Void

HIGH I'm always up for any vehicle that transforms.

LOW Struggling (and failing) to keep up with missiles hitting friendly ships.

WTF Where's the rest of the content?

Air Conflicts: Vietnam Review

Air War is Also Hell

HIGH Finding out what happened to the main character post-game.

LOW Why are there rail shooter segments?

WTF Am I seriously spraying Agent Orange over rural Vietnam?

Crimson Dragon Review

Tedium Can Fly

HIGH Saori Kobayashi's magnificent soundtrack.

LOW So this is what next-gen graphics look like, eh?

WTF Not realizing that the game has Kinect functionality and watching the dragon perform dozens of unprompted barrel rolls.

Race the Sun review

Mors Certa, Hora Incerta

HIGH Safely navigating an insane gauntlet of death at terrifying speeds.

LOW Seeing many of the same obstacles reappear two days on the trot.

WTF Why would anyone partake in this venture? Nobody survives it!

TouchTalk, Volume Five

Welcome back to a semi-regular feature here at GameCritics.com: TouchTalk. While this series was inspired by one of my old features, the Bargain Basement, I've got an all-new focus for an all-new phase in gaming. Rather than highlighting discounted gems in the used section of a retail shop, I'll be reviewing downloadable mobile games and apps that you might want to check out… and maybe some that you'll want to avoid.

Sine Mora (Vita) Review

You got Your Bullet-hell in My Side-scroller!

Sine Mora (Vita) Screenshot

HIGH It's… so… damned… pretty…

LOW Flying through the debris chute and failing to avoid the lasers.

WTF Why are the other powers not in story mode?

Misfits, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, Absolution and Sine Mora

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale Screenshot

GameFly sent me Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale the other day, and while I haven't had a whole lotta time to get into it, I did play a few multiplayer sessions with my youngest son. The time we spent on it basically amounts to me standing still while he beats on me with a variety of different characters, but he enjoys it and that's good enough for us.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor Review

War. What is it Good for? Giant Walking Mecha.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor Screenshot

HIGH I managed to keep a crewmember alive for two consecutive missions. A personal best!

LOW Kinect-based quicktime events in a timed mission against a boss that can one-shot me.

WTF Twenty of my thirty crew members died by the halfway point of the game due to my incompetency. Why am I in charge of the platoon again?
