Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – Review

Deadly Alliance is creative, unique, accessible, and polished. It comes up lacking in a few areas, but is clearly the most effectively realized version of Mortal Kombat yet.

Car Battler Joe – Review

A player can never know for sure if they will like the title until they're playing it. There's joy in knowing money was well spent on a good game and inversely, disappointment in having wasted time with a lemon. In sticking with the gambling metaphor, Car Battler Joe, a Game Boy Advance release from Natsume, is the casino equivalent of putting a quarter in the slot machine and winning a million dollars.

Red Faction 2 – Review

There's just something sad about videogame villain design. Take Red Faction II for example. The game is clearly set in a far-flung future, where dictators should be sporting snappier duds than today's. Designers can afford to take liberties on the villain's fashion sense because it's in the future.

Mega Man Zero – Review

The story in Mega Man Zero unfolds with good grammar and correct spelling, but the scrolling text also illustrates that grammar and spelling are not the only considerations when it comes to translations. To state the obvious: there are cultural differences to consider. At this point I am tempted to go about things in the most politically correct fashion possible, trying to legitimize both eastern and western viewpoints, but that wouldn't reflect the way I feel.

The fourth in the legendary series that began in the now defunct Sega Saturn, Panzer Dragoon Orta sticks with what made the first two games (the third being a role-playing game) so wonderful.

War of the Monsters– Review

People in the 1950's were scared. The world at that time was a different place, and America had a host of things to worry about. Capitalizing on the feeling of imminent doom, filmmakers of the era played upon the things that kept people up at night and turned those fears into box-office gold. Concerns over rapidly advancing science materialized in the form of mutants terrorizing innocent townsfolk. Deep-seated distrust of technology surfaced in runaway robot features, and perhaps the largest phobia used as a theme was America's fear of Communism.

Final Fantasy IX – Review

I can't help wondering how much Final Fantasy IX really deserves my praise, and whether I should instead be paying homage to the earlier games in the series for providing so much of its inspiration.

Ratchet & Clank – Second Opinion

Gene brings up an interesting question of perspective. But, in contrast to his thoughts, I was trying to justify to myself why I was playing Ratchet & Clank. I had passed up several opportunities to play the game's full version after being unimpressed with the demo handed out at E3. Specifically, I was totally apathetic to the by-the-numbers character design, and the idea of collecting "stuff" while dodging enemies, and jumping pits has lost some appeal over the years.
