Borderlands 2. It's one of those rare releases that I look forward to for a year, and when played I know that the wait was certainly worth it.

It's a 'comfort-grinder' I guess. I like the over the top inaccessibility of the story, all the strange Judeo-Christian references, I like the combat animations and art style. Great battle theme. I like how you can go back to old dungeons through the virtual system to regain missed loot. I like the characters. Particularly Kos-Mos. You never know whether she's just plain murderous or really has some connection with Shion.
She reminds me of the assassin android in the anime Black Magic M-66.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Still working my way through Bioshock, and I think I'm getting pretty close to the end. My enthusiasm is waning a bit- the penalty for dying is insubstantial (at worse, a two-minute trek back to where you were), and it's started to rely on a few jump scares, which I was not impressed with. The game does brilliantly building up the atmosphere and making you panic at earlier points in the game. I'm enjoying it immensely despite any minor quibbles I have with it, but if Bioshock 2 really is just more of the same, I'll be giving that one a miss for now. Still finding it to be a great game, though- plenty of variety as far as shooters go, and the aesthetic of Rapture has subtly changed, some really cool touches as you progress through this strange city.

Saw that Torchlight is included in the current Humble Bundle, and it's a game I've wanted to try for ages (nearly pre-ordered TL2 on Steam, purely because it came with a free copy of the original game). Quite looking forward to playing it later on this evening. The bundle as a whole seems pretty cool, actually. Vessel is a game I'm eager to check out in the near future.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Torchlight is lots of super fun and I like it.

Not as shallow as I expected at all- whilst combat is as simple as clicking on what you want killed, it can be quite a balancing act to make sure you have enough mana, health, etc. It's addictive getting lots and lots of treasures and gold, which is what this game is about. This is the first time I've ever chosen to play as a character that isn't a straight-up warrior- I chose the alchemist, and it's a refreshing change, didn't take long to get to grips with him.

On the down side, I've come across at least one game-breaking glitch so far (my character got stuck in some scenery, and I had to restart the whole game). The loading times also seem a little excessive, even with my laptop's respectable specs. Really enjoying the game thus far, however, not a lot of bad stuff I can say about it.

Re: What are you playing right now?

In anticipation of a new lovers arrival I started a new game in X-Com (the 1994 original). If they would just take the original game and give it some high-res sprites it would sell like cupcakes. I started out with my base on Crete, after shooting UFO's down left, right and centre more bases got built and now I have Americom (in Panama), Asiacom (Taiwan), Kiwicom (New Zealand) and Pacificom (Russia's east coast). This is also the first time it occurs to me how ridiculously overpowered psionics are in the late game. I have one soldier with a psionic strength of 99 (her name is Evelyn Thompson, a sharpshooter, a psyker, a legend) and she can take out entire battleships alone by chain-mind-controlling aliens and hence forcing them to kill each other. Even high-level alien psykers like Etherals pose little problem, I just need a second attempt sometimes.

But now I'm mainly waiting for Firaxis' take on the series. XCom is pre-ordered for months already.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Back from holiday and finally got my Madden franchise started; the mighty Chargers are 3 and 1. It cannot last.

Managed to get one co-op session of Borderlands 2 in; it's more of the same so far, may be a teeny bit more strategic than B1 (in that you can't just rush in all guns blazing). I am dissatisfied with the Gunzerker though, I may restart and bring the Zero character up to where I am now(Level 8, Sanctuary).

Re: What are you playing right now?

Well, I completed Machinarium (free with PS+), but I can't really put it in the 'Completed' thread as I looked up c. 97% of all the puzzle solutions. No joke.

Charming, yet infuriating.

Had a quick go at Tokyo Jungle. Hmmmm, jury still out.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Broken Sword-Directors Cut It's weird how much of this game I remember, after originally playing it, just the once, on the Game Boy Advance many years ago. Aside from the new Nico sections (which are very good, btw- they fit in great, and adds some great Nico-related backstory in tandem to the main quest), I've remembered the solution to just about every puzzle. Weird.

Great game, and graphically it looks fine. The cut-scenes have this nineties cartoon feel, which I appreciate inparticular. I can't really comment on the changes from the original, other than the added scenes, but it doesn't feel out of date, which I guess is what they were partly going for.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Did you ever continue with the Walking Dead past episode 1?

I have been playing Tokyo Jungle. Very confusing. I started out as a deer, meaning I couldn't really attack anything. Wandered around a grid of streets, marking my territory, mating with other deer, and slowly running out of food. I lasted 30 years (prob 30-45 mins in game) and then got attacked and killed by some goats just as I was tracking down a gazelle boss which I guess would have closed out the level. However my last mate was a mangy deer who was obviously sub-prime (she gave me fleas) and we only had two offspring which were slowly starving to death when the goats attacked.

Very confusing. It appears I have to start from scratch again to progress. Not sure if I will, though the game is exerting some kind of grip on my subconscious.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Unfortunately, no, though it's certainly not through choice. I've moved house recently, and haven't sorted out my internet connection yet. Whilst I could just borrow someone elses internet and download them, I liked how the decisions you made at the end of the first (and presumably the following) episode, were compared to everyone elses, and wouldn't want to miss out on that. I get to play them one after the other at some point soon, so I'm not too bothered :-D

Until then, I have the rest of the Broken Swords to play through. Particularly looking forward to the second one. I remember getting obsessed with a demo of it when I was about twelve for some reason.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Bioshock is becoming a real chore. I think I'm near the end, (I recently woke up in that room with all the little girls. I've saved them all, I assume it's different if you kill them), but it's just dragging on now, and it's starting to piss me off. I'm going to finish it, I've vowed to myself I'm going to persevere at any game I start now, but christ, this game is just boring. Won't be playing Bioshock 2.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Did you get to that bit where you have to escort the single little sister down the corridor? That was the low point for me; nearly broke me.

Bioshock 2 improves on every aspect of Bioshock except maybe the story, so don't write it off. It is a much better and much more 'fun' game. Dual wielding a power in one hand and a gun in the other makes a big difference. You should try it out when you have had a suitable break from this one.

Tokyo Jungle is fucked up. I don't think I understand the appeal of rogue-likes with random drops - do people just have infinite fucking time to do levels over and over again?

The food supply in TJ appears to be random, and to disappear at night. Don't think I'll persevere with this.

Re: What are you playing right now?

The end of Bioshock was pretty disappointing. I loved the game right until the "big twist", then it went downhill rather quickly.

What went uphill (while going downhill) is Spec Ops: the Line. Since I'm "not allowed" to name Dark Souls as my Game of the Year again, Spec Ops is a contender for my GOTY (yes, I'm being serious). I just ponder if I should play through it once more... but with XCom and Dishonored coming out on Friday (damn you different release dates depending on continent! especially with continents being such arbitrary concepts), I guess I won't be playing much else for the next month.

Re: What are you playing right now?

Yea, I'd agree with the big twist in Bioshock being the point where it goes downhill. The twist itself isn't even dealt with very well, I wasn't very interested. And now I find out about an upcoming escort mission...!?

I notice in the "finished games" thread, you say that Spec-Ops was not fun. Do you mean that the tone of the game itself is a bit grim, or that it's something that should be played for a great experience, rather than the gameplay itself? If I can find a copy for the right side of twenty quid, I'm going to give it a go.
