I'm not sure where you're getting the notion that anything I said was remotely ad hominem; I'm just suggesting the conversation is more than a little pointless when you can see the outcome before the conversation even starts. Based on the criteria you're asking, a "yes" is impossible. Purpose is a human concept and can't exist independently of the individual. Something that is abstractly and arbitrarily defined can't be objectively quantified. Although if you like to revel in this sort of redundant pseudo-philosophical musing, then knock yourself out. To answer your question, I vote "no".

Purpose is actually a teological concept, and may or may not be compatible with (efficient) causal explanations. Whether it can be reduced to a human construct, though, is to be similarly guilty of solipsism on a global level - human claims to knowledge is not the measure by which something can be (finally) judged or determined - this is Nicato's 'argument' in reverse. The fact that we have no (cough) 'objective'' criteria to 'prove' purpose does not mean that life has no purpose or that it is simply a human construct : to quote Dennis Leary's Asshole Song - we just don't know (whatever our knowledge claims can ever amount to in a world of experience).

Now beatbass, don't fall into the trap of...
...Nicato's modus operandi, which includes: 1. starting a controversial topic to reel others in. 2. disagreeing vehemently/playing devil's advocate to majority's point of view 3. find means of dismissing other's point of view as crap with whatever pretentious words in his arsenal of vitriols 4. other people start to get irritated with his assholery 5. he viciously explains that he has no problem being an asshole and make it look like it's everyone's fault to pick on him. shame on us, so he will say in "euphemisms" 6. starts taming down a little so people will start acting sympathetic to him 7. lather, rinse, repeat, ad nauseum.
Honestly, when this thread first started, my initial reaction was "uh-oh". Turns out I predicted right: he's all prepped up at full throttle to spew toxics.
Well, at least he has a purpose in life, and that's to be as much an asshole as conceivable. So while you're still a fresh member of GameCritics (even though I know you're actuallynot) as stated by your post count, let me introduce to you: the ignore list.
P.S. God knows this guy shrinks whenever Endurogamer starts getting pissed off. Talk about being sycophantic.

Re: Does life have a purpose?
Thanks for the advice Shun, but I actually like Nicato - he's obviously intelligent, if a little too convinced of the tenability of his own convictions. I'm intrigued by the fact that his IQ - or at least, his knowledge and/or abilty to argue - has improved through these 'discussions'. It's true that he's not really interested in what other people have to say - they're more a means to an end (or an opportunity to clarify and refine his own decisions). But that's true of most people, although he seems to typically play (and best) them at their own game.
As for Endurogamer - now, don't get me started on *that* guy.

It seems to me you're far more "intrigued" by your own capacity to analyse his behaviour and that of other people, than by any of these pretexts you pull out.
(ok, so I had to say it. Go on and wipe the floor with me).

Not sure I understand - what are you accusing me of exactly? What is the pretext/s or intrigue, and in what way do you think that I'm self regarding? Are you saying that that the 'purpose' of my posts is to show how smart I am, or how stupid other people are - if only to feel good about myself? What would be the purpose of that? And why do feel compelled to put me in my place (or show me up as such)? Aren't you doing the very thing you're accussing me of here - assuming I understand you correctly?

I'm the opportunist yet you're the one pretending to provide advice to a member ten times your senior so you can publicly vent about me. Lame. If that's my M.O. then I'm glad you give me credit for at least being clever.

Off topic: I'm flattered but I really doubt if one can measure an IQ. Most tests have silly variables like age and race (though the latter is very controversial). Given those factors, I'm firmly in the "above average" crowd (135); without them I'm on the high end of average. My most recent test actually scored me lower than I was two years ago. Needless to say, I have a severe distrust for such tests.
The Bell Curve clearly shows the correlation between penis size and intelligence:
