New Review Posted: Custom Robo

Chi Kong Lui reviews Custom Robo, and opens with a scathing criticism of the industry:

"Game companies know when their games suck. They have armies of play testers and hordes of focus groups that give them plenty of advance warning. And yet each year hundreds of uninspired and below average games unassumingly occupy store shelves; perhaps as a desperate attempt to recoup costs or get a fat tax write-off. Some consumers will take the bait and get suckered into buying them because of familiarity with the genre or the company that releases it. That's what happened with when I purchased Custom Robo for the GameCube."

The attack goes on here.

Re: New Review Posted: Custom Robo

Great review Chi.

After doing the guidebook for Gotcha Force, I was hooked on the idea of a collectible, action game so I bought Custom Robo right at release. Boy, was that a mistake. The lack of sense, the lack of challenge, and the repetition were too much to handle.

Anybody looking for a game that might offer up what Custom Robo's boxart promises had better look at Gotcha Force instead. Gotcha Force is a far superior title (only for GC though).

Re: New Review Posted: Custom Robo

I gave Custom Robo a rent over winter break and had pretty much the same reactions as Chi and Enduro. It had the potential to be a pretty good game, but it just doesn't do anything really well.

Chi, its nice to see you writing more reviews lately, I really enjoy them.

Enduro, I looked up some reviews on Gotcha Force and they were nearly were pretty negative. Not trying to question your opinion of the game, but what did you like about it?

Re: New Review Posted: Custom Robo

Gotcha Force had an awesome collectible aspect of it, it had hundreds of different Borgs, and many of them had very different styles of play so half the strategy really was in the formation of your team.

I felt the team aspect of it was very well done, the ability to use your available experience to either form a tank with a few really strong Borgs, or teams with all ranged-units, or with dozens of peons, worked really well.

Some Borgs could fly, some could transform, others were very fast and had melee attacks, others were healers, others could call in nuclear attacks, while others through throwing stars and fired guns. The variety was endless.

The camera was minorl problematic and mashing the A Button constantly did get a little old, but truth be told, I found Gotcha Force to be one of the best non first-party Gamecube titles available. And for the money, it's hard to beat it.

Thanks for mentioning Gotcha Force Enduro. I was on the fence, but your recommendation helps. I feel like playing it just to cleanse myself of Custom Robo. The game is surprisingly hard to find. It may even be considered rare.

Yep, it is very rare. In fact, I ended up doing the guidebook for it, but so few stores were carrying the game, that my book ended up being used as a free giveaway to those who bought the game at EB. But what a book it was!

Good luck finding a copy--check the used racks at Gamestop.

Just a suggestion, but if you can't find it in a brick & mortar, you could always try ordering in directly through Capcom.
