New Review Posted: God of War

Brad Gallaway reviews God of War and flies in the face of convention:

"By most accounts, the game has walked its talk and made good on the hype and excitement generated by the media. I was fully prepared to agree and join the crowd of cheerleaders before I started writing this review, but now looking back and reflecting on it after completion, I'm not so sure. I certainly think that God of War is an outstanding game when looking at each of its components, but it takes more than technical excellence to create a true classic."

I dunno. Brad's review certainly had the makings of a classic , but it lacked something - a certain 'it'.

Okay...so the game isn't a classic because...the main character is TOO badass?

But seriously, I see the point. Even if the character is a mean motherfucker, he should at least have some sort of emotional connection with the audience. In other words, less Warrior Within and more Solid Snake.

Re: New Review Posted: God of War

Maybe if Kratos took the time to give the Hydra or Medusa a hug, it would have shown his more human side. I mean, he's all rage and violence, look at him, all creamy white, angry and muscly. It would not hurt to crack a smile and soften that physique up Kratos. That will give you some more personality.

EDIT: After reading the review, I'm glad to see that you didn't give it a free ride. It's funny that you mentioned the sympathy thing. I'm sure you've watched the unlockable videos, but in one they comment on how they considered having him with a baby on his back or maybe a dog with him. That would've gone a long way to enhance him IMO.

It's also funny you mentioned Legacy of Kain, because my brother and I both were remarking on how Kain was such a better "superevil" guy than Kratos as he was playing.

Re: New Review Posted: God of War

Brandon Erickson offers these thoughts on the subject of God of War:

"Instantly accessible and consistently thrilling, God of War represents a truly great achievement in action game design—a game that within minutes of pressing the start button has players ripping undead soldiers in half, tearing the wings off harpies, and subduing giant hydras through sheer brute force. Though not a groundbreaking game, it is a visually and aurally exciting one, and stands as arguably the most outstanding example of its kind."
