New Review Posted: Summoner: A Goddess Reborn

Tera Kirk reviews Summoner: A Goddess Reborn, and gives me a shout-out, which I appreciate:

"Being a game critic is a little like being a soldier. Armies keep their countries safe; we play problematic games so other people don't have to. Spending 45 hours with Summoner: A Goddess Reborn won't get me the Medal of Honor—Daniel Weissenberger deserves that award, hands down. Nevertheless, I hope that I can protect others from the game's badness. Don't get me wrong—Summoner: A Goddess Reborn has some good ideas. They're simply crushed by its technical flaws and boring, boxed-in gameworld."

Despite lacking further references to me, the rest of the review is very much worth reading, and you can do so here.

Re: New Review Posted: Summoner: A Goddess Reborn

Good review, Tera.

Too bad the game sucked; it would, indeed, be nice to have another /strong/ female lead in a title. My conspiracy theory d'moment (obviously, I don't speak French, d'uh) is that putting "respectable" female leads in a title is kinda like a straight man doing housework for their spouse / significant other. I suspect men really know how to clean and cook, do the laundry and take care of any children about (including the four-leggers). However, if the wife actually /knew/ they were capable, those wives might want (or expect) them to help out around the house more frequently. Ergo, whenever those devil-may-care husbands are asked to lend a hand, they purposely flub things up so they won't have to do housework anymore. (That's right, guys, I'm on to you. )

Btw, Tera, why isn't your pic up? The other reviewers have theirs..

This is my bad. Ever since I upgraded my PC, I haven't reinstalled Photoshop yet. Expect it up soon.

That may just be the best line ever in a review.

Re: New Review Posted: Summoner: A Goddess Reborn

Thanks, Hypatia! I was hoping you’d comment.

It really is too bad that "Summoner: A Goddess Reborn" had so many flaws. The strong female characters are intriguing (though visually they didn’t do anything for me) and I want to see more like them. I might’ve forgiven some of its technical glitches if it were a PS2 game—but it just ran too poorly for a GameCube title. And yeah, I may have been a little hard on it because, thanks to my own stupidity, I had to start over about fifteen hours in (gah!). It still sucked, though.

I do like playing as men; part of why I love videogames is because they let me be somebody I’m not. But if I have the opportunity to play as a woman, I take it.

Call me a hopeless optimist, but I think we’re going to see more and more diversity in videogame characters as time goes on. (e.g. GTA: SA and games like "Fable" and "The Sims," which let you fall in love with whomever you want). We can only go up from here.

Haha...thanks, Mike. I watched *way* too much of VH1s Most Shocking Celebrity Moments that week.

No, thank you..! *said in my best Chip & Dale accent*

As far as playing men, I have no problem with it either. As a matter of fact back in the day when I first started tt rpg'ing, all I played were guys. Cultural influence, among other things, I suppose. I still to this day play guys on occassion (much moreso when I'm running a game, for obvious reasons). I just think it's /great/ when there's an opportunity to play a woman, well, one who's strong. (I'm crossing my fingers for Starcraft: Ghost.. ahh.. if it ever comes out.)

But don't get me started on Fable, not that I didn't appreciate the opportunity to "fall in love" with another guy, it's just that.. ARRGH! Must.. stop.. now.

Hypatia, I would love to know what you think of all the girl on girl action in Rumble Roses. My review should be published in two weeks.

I have to admit the title intrigues me, and not just for obvious reasons. Otoh, I've never played /any/ wrestling games, the closest being Def Jam: FFNY (which I really like). Actually it's that latter title that's brought my interest level up on the former, and regarding Fight Night '04 too (of which I've yet to pick up).

Bottom line: I'll have a look at your review, and we can go from there.

Def Jam FFNY is essentially a tweaked wrestling game engine. Not to mention FFNY is probably a 100 times harder than Rumble Roses. If you've mastered either Def Jam game, other wrestling games should be cake.

RR is very easy in general and I think that was intensionally done so the game isn't such a tease (for lack of a better way to put it).

Re: New Review Posted: Summoner: A Goddess Reborn

Tera,

You look amazingly familiar. I mean really. Do you get that all the time, or is there a chance we've met or something?

Chi,

Thanks for the upload. It's always nice to put faces to personalities (for the lack of a better term).
