New Feature Posted: E3 2004 Report: Part 2 - Hype-Worthy Awards

"Hideo Kojima can sell a game better than anyone in the business. Regardless of how flawed, weird, or completely off-the-wall his games are, when he says "jump"—we jump. The controversy surrounding Metal Gear Solid 2 (MGS2) has shattered under the awesome weight of MGS3's Hollywood-style hype, and it looks as deserved as ever."

Re: New Feature Posted: E3 2004 Report: Part 2 - Hype-Worthy Awards

To me, it seems that each Critic came to E3 with their own agenda. Games that they were impressed by were already pre-determined, be it sequels to their favorite series' or a game--any game--with the slightest hint of orginality. I find it conspicuos that Odama, X-Tango, and DK: Jungle Beat were mentioned more than once. It seems to me that any orginal and/or innovative game highlighted was put there strictly for 'street cred'. Or maybe I find it hard to swallow that no one is skeptical of a platformer controlled by drums.

Despite the contrast between the seemingly obligatory shot-outs and the predictable stand-outs, I think the article was amusing.

if it's any consolation, i thought the DK bongo games were shit.

anyway, you've got to expect the sort of fringe picks we had given our histories and the site's orientation... i did review Power Shovel, after all.

I've seen DK Jungle Beat in action. It's not too hard to see why some woud be psyched for it, myself included.

I just wanted to clarify something: There were two games previewed at E3 that use the bongo drum peripheral. The first was a rhythm-action game called Donkey Konga, which is the one I endorsed in the report. The second was the platformer, Donkey Konga: Jungle Beat, which didn't do much for me.
