Mike Bracken reviews R-Type Final

"R-Type Final is too old and entrenched in its ways to be anything more than a simple shmup."

I noticed you didn't really touch on the music aspect of the game, Mike. It's kind of different for a Shump, so I was hoping you'd comment on it. Anyways, what were your thoughts on the music? I thought it kinda hampered the experience personally.

I wasn't impressed by the music, but it didn't bother me either...hence I sort of left it out since I didn't have anything particularly poignant to say about it.

As a professional musician, I gotta side with Mike here. The music isn't particularly memorable in the game. If you want a great shmup soundtrack, go listen to Gradius 3 on the SNES (NOT the music in the Gradius 3+4 package for PS2). Somehow, even 13 years later, that game still sounds sweet.

Holy cow, it's been 13 years since I picked up Gradius 3? ugh...

New Second Op Posted

Andrew Fletcher writers:
"Frustrating and repetitive, Irem have made no attempt to expand the series' 17 year old template. This is the same bit-by-bit progress and memory test gameplay that we've seen since the original first hit arcades in 1987: entertainment at its most masochistic, with one of the most inconspicuous fun factors in gaming history."
