New Review Posted: Trauma Centre: Under the Knife

Brad Gallaway plays Trauma Centre: Under the Knife, and finds that he likes the whole 'surgeon' thing:

"With the unconventional design of the DS, Nintendo suggested that developers would step in and use its technological opportunities to create innovative games and new play experiences. Up to this point, I would say that this prophecy has gone largely unfulfilled. There have been some neat games to be sure, but in my opinion, very few of them have really capitalized on the things that separate the DS from the competition until Trauma Center: Under the Knife came along."

There are more specific compliments to be found here.

You might want to fix the link in this thread. It leads to the Eye Toy review.

Trauma Centre, or Center? And what's with the japanese screenshots mixed in with the english?

Just nit-picking.

Still, great review!

Good review, and good point about buying a larger stylus - the default one was often practically falling out of my hand by the end of a surgery.

However, am I the only one who thought the GUILT facet of the story was completely silly and unnecessary? I would have been more than happy just playing through the life of a normal doctor struggling with his demons.

I personally liked the GUILT, to a point. I figured the game would go in some kooky direction like that, being that it's japanese-made, and I normally don't mind that kind of thing. However, I was a little disheartened that the game became entirely about it. I would've liked to have more regular cases interspersed in the main GUILT storyline.

EDIT: After reading your (well-written) article, I need to clarify that I meant that from a gameplay perspective. Taking out GUILT was fun. From a storyline angle, I would normally agree with you, but Trauma Center as a whole was so much tripe that I didn't really care.

Oh, Brad! But you're my Hero! How can you /not/ finish a game!?! (Well, not purposefully, that is.)

And here I thought the difficulty ramp was just b/c it was me. Heh. Glad to see I'm not the only one who suffered under the extreme ramp up. What were they thinking?

Good review, as always, but I'm not sure whether taking out the GUILT factor would've helped or not. This was most definitely a "Japanese" title, and as you know, Atlus can do little wrong in my eyes.. so I think the wacky alien bug thing would have to be a given considering the source.. okay, publisher..
