OoT: Master Quest = gaming bliss

Well, I finally got my copy of the Ocarina of Time bonus disk yesterday. I wasn't really aware (not paying attention?) to the fact that there were TWO games on the disk in addition to the movies.

My opinion is based off the further opinion that OoT for the N64 is one of the best games available. Yeah, I'm a Zelda fanboy, but you cannot doubt how well-crafted and enjoyable this game is/was.

Now, the Master Quest not only allows you to play this fine game again, but it's almost like a new game! Yeah, so the dungeons are a bit different and they changed around some of the puzzles, but I have to tell you that this game is harder than the original! Maybe it's me and I'm a bit rusty (I doubt it as I am kicking butt in Metroid Prime on the hard mode right now) but I had a somewhat hard time negotiating the first "dungeon" (Deku Tree). I cannot wait to see what the real dungeons have in store for us.

Anybody else playing through the Master Quest right now?

You're not the only one who had trouble with the Deku Tree. I found myself running around looking for hearts quite a few times in that level to avoid tarnishing my 000 record.

**SMALL SPOILERS AHEAD**

I also had to buy another deku shield halfway through the dungeon. Those fire Keese really took me by surprise.

And I was really surprised by those Baby Gohmas. At first, I didn't know you could break those eggs before they hatched. And you know those rooms where there are probably 6 or 7 eggs spread all over the floor and ceiling? Well, all of those eggs hatched and I had a fun time trying to get rid of all those jumping creatures without dying.

**END MINI-SPOILERS**

But, overall, I really like Master Quest. It breathes new life into an old classic.

I'm about one week into Master Quest, and am loving every minute of it (Impressions tomorrow). I know this is going to sound silly and plainly obvious, but the explanation behind naming it "Master Quest" was because Nintendo designed this Japanese Zelda for those who felt they "mastered" our Ocarina of Time with the greatest of ease. And sure enough, I found myself in a bit of a pickle just trying to get through the Deku Tree.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I've played OoT at least a trillion times, so naturally I confidentally stroll up to the three Deku Scrubs that guard Gohma's lair and defeated them in the usual order 2-3-1. Surprise surprise, I get plastered with deku nuts as my combination was incorrect. Took me nearly ten tries just to find the right one, and lost two hearts in the process. Bugger.

***END SPOILER***

I've successfully made it to the Adult Link half of the story, and am currently doing the trading game to obtain the Biggoron Sword before going to the Forest Temple (it's possible, but I had to traverse through the Ice Cavern and that was a pain). Just trying to make life easier.

I'm head over heals for Master Quest, and feel it provides the extra difficulty I crave with the Zelda title I can't get enough of. A win-win combination. I will offer this word of warning, though. If you thought the Deku Tree was hard, hope you have fun Inside Jabu Jabu's Belly. Let's just say you better be packing fairies....

Just picked up my copy today. Tomorrow morning I have an interview with someone from Nintendo. Hopefully they can hook me up with a free GBA SP and Wind Waker! Fingers are crossed...

Got mine on sunday and ive been playin alot. So far ive gottin to the future and i got the hookshot and epona.
Master quest is awsome, my favorite new dungeon so far is dodongos cavern i like that to make it harder istead of just making the enemys tougher they made the puzzles tougher. Inside jabu jabu is also great and if you havent played it yet let me just say MOOOO.

I believe an alternate explanation lies in the very first Legend of Zelda cartridge for the NES. Once you fought Ganon and completed the game, you had the option of playing the "Zelda Master Quest," which featured the same overworld but with new, harder dungeons, different locations for everything, and, I believe, even a different route through the Haunted Maze Woods (or whatever it was called).

For those of you itching to try it out without going through Zelda yet again, there's a secret code to get there quickly: when starting a new game, enter your name as "zelda" and voila, Master Quest!

ior, that's right! I totally missed the Master Quest connection to the original Zelda. Yes, that truly was a masterpiece. Not only were the dungeons different in the second quest, but their locations, the locations of "which bush you burn" and "what wall you bomb" in the overworld. Heck, most everything was different, save the overall layout of the overworld. And yes, the Lost Woods had a different pattern. Man, what a great game. But, OoT is equally as great.

I don't have time to be stuck in master quest. This isn't six years ago when I could play Ocarina of Time for 10 hours at a time and get unstuck rather fast. If I am stuck for more than ten minutes I'll check the guide Nintendo has online. I've only been stuck once in each dungeon so far, so I don't feel guilty about it. I wouldn't feel guilty about it anyway...

I love the Master Quest of the original Zelda. So difficult it's scary (invisible doors, red bubbles that take your sword permanently unless you find a blue bubble, scary). There were some magazines that were passing it off as a quest for the third piece of the Triforce (the Triforce of Courage, left out of the original). But this was after Zelda sequels that featured a third piece to the triad of Hyrule.

The explanation of OoT's Master Quest I had came from an interview with a Nintendo rep. Apparently, a few suits didn't enjoy hearing hardcore American gamers brag about cruising through their epic in a day or two. I will give credit where credit is due, though. This is one bitch of a game.
