Re: Best Games of this Generation

Second post updated with 'scores' (or will be in a minute or two).

I'm adding in Fallout 3, because it really was an important and excellent game when it came out. Oblivion With Guns, what higher praise can a game receive?

As the Eurogamer retrospective put it so well:

Quote:
The change was seismic: to say it lightly, Fallout die-hards were non-plussed, lost and angry but hang on... what's that noise?

"Bongo. Bongo. Bongo. I don't wanna leave the Congo! Oh no, no, no-no!"

Could it be?

"Bingo, bangle, bungle, I'm so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go!"

It is! It's me, sauntering over a beautiful apocalyptic ridge - listening to The Andrews Sisters, blowing Super Mutant heads in two with a Rivet gun and 100 per cent not giving a shit.

7/10

Re: Best Games of this Generation

numbers below just indicate how amazed i was with each amazing game. How memorable the experience was. If similar games afterwards reminded me of it, the better predecessor.
More of a Greatest Hits then a true wannabe objective Best Of. Or so. Whatever.

Super Mario Galaxy I & II
It is simply delighting to play any level in both games.
10/10 + 10/10

Virtue's Last Reward
Great characters, great story, great puzzles.
9/10

Bayonetta
B2 is so far the only game i am interested on the wii-u.
9/10

Crysis (Warhead)
It should be the archetype of how (still linear) shooters should be designed.
7/10

Dead Nation/ Waves
I love Twin Stick Shooters
7/10 + 7/10

ClickR
My Tetris game of this gen.
10/10

Super Meat Boy
It basically comes down to the perfect controls it has.
10/10

Batman: Arkham Asylum
The Dark Knight simulator. In a Codemasters sense. ;-)
6/10

Team Fortress 2 / Trackmania (especially TM Nations)
I usually loose interest in MP-Games after a very few hours. Winning a simple round as the goal is normally pointless for me. Here i spent something like 100+ hours in each game before i had to move on.
10/10 + 10/10

Honorable mentions
Puddle
Demon's Souls
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
Brütal Legend
Limbo
Amnesia
Wipeout HD
GT5
Retro/Grade
Stalker
1/10 each, if you want to count them too

Re: Best Games of this Generation

Good to see you around here again.

@Topic:
XCOM - Enemy Within 9/10 if you are inclined to give scores. It made a good game even better with a handful of new additions that make the bughunt feel fresh again. I don't want to go back playing a XCOM without MEC...

Of course! Your Demon's Souls vote has elevated it into second place above Skyrim.

Good choices too. I'd like to back a few of them:

Stalker
An FPS unlike any other, primarily in terms of atmosphere and location. What a world. It had issues (the last couple of levels) but was such a strong game that you'd forgive it anything. 7/10

Well, ok, one of them. I was fond of Limbo, but it got tedious for me at the end with all the trial and error.

I would also like to nominate:

Hotline Miami.
I was a bit wary of including this as I only played it recently, but it's really a little slice of perfection. Strong in all departments, encourages different playstyles, and the music was perfect. 9/10

And hey, guys! Guess what we forgot!?

Deadly Premonition!

Guys?

I'm mixed about this, after their attempt at destroying the game with the recent ports to PS3 and Windows. But it has enough genius contained within it that I will try and forget the whole sorry episode. 8/10

Re: Best Games of this Generation

How bad are the PC or PS3 Ports? I've heard a lot of negative talk on gamecritics specifically, and not very much elsewhere. Then again, I've only really heard talk about Deadly Premonition at all from gamecritics.

If I'm going to play the game at all, it'll be on one of those platforms.

Re: Best Games of this Generation

Welllll....it shouldn't dissuade you from getting the game, as it should be experienced, for better or for worse.

I'm actually not familiar with the PC port, apart from reading a few alarming headlines (but not clicking through).

Some of the mechanics have actually been improved on the PS3 (shooting), and the other stuff probably isn't noticeable unless you played the Xbox version, so there's no need to worry about it.

I am just massively disappointed that such an original game went down the cash-grab route. All they had to do was fix a few things in the game, but instead they ignored those and decided to 'monetise' it instead. One of the better female characters of recent years has a Catsuit DLC, for example. But try it out! As I said somewhere else, I wanted to really slate the PS3 port but ended up in grudging admiration despite it all. I probably won't buy any more of his games though.

Re: Best Games of this Generation

After a lot of thought, I'm adding Gone Home to my list of nominations. I was initially hesitant simply because the game does not match up well with the epic games that tend to define "best of" lists.

But Gone Home is perhaps the first game I've ever played where I can't think of a single thing I would change about it, and nothing I would want to add to it. It only lasts three hours, it tells a relatively simple story, and it doesn't have much in the way of gameplay... but what it does it does perfectly.

And I would love to see many more games follow the "short and sweet and can be finished in a single sitting" example that Gone Home sets. Gone Home shouldn't be penalized for not being epic or vast, it should be rewarded.

Re: Best Games of this Generation

whoops! just noticed i have completely forgotten Portal.
add another 10

After finishing BF3 lately- cringeworthy- i also remembered another DICE-game:
Mirrors Edge was a damn fine experience.
Sort of. At least in an ideal world where the actual game was like the first trailer promised. And since this fantasy is the game i remember having played:
another 1/10

some mobile games were also fun

Cut the Rope
simple and excellent use of touchscreen gameplay
3/10

Burn the Rope
simple and excellent use of gyro gameplay
2/10

I got this in the Steam Sale last week, I'm looking forward to playing it.

Agree 100%.

Scores updated!

Edit: Zanbatou - did you try out To the Moon at all? It fits that description (well, 2 sittings).

I haven't tried To The Moon Yet, but I did pick up a copy a few sales back. I'll try to make some time for it this weekend. Thanks for the recommendation.

Re: Best Games of this Generation

You have Portal listed twice on the score list, each at 10. The game should actually be sitting at 20.

Also, I'm approaching the 100 hour point in XCom and I'm still having a blast with it, so you can safely add some more points there (If I'm allowed more nominations). I haven't made it very far into the expansion yet, but you should still add the points to XCom: Enemy Within as it clearly improves an already great game.

Whoops! Fixed. Thanks for pointing that out.

Sure, just post the score in here. I myself am still adding nominations and points. The only thing I would discourage is adding or removing points from games we have already nominated in order to move them up/down the chart. Not that any of us will be doing that!

Re: Best Games of this Generation

Another 1/10 for Condemned: Criminal Origins
Like Fear they rammed it in the ground with its successor, but it is sort of a combination of Demons Souls and Amnesia.
Similar to Mirrors Edge or Kane Lynch it's a nomination more due to what it could have been than what it really was. But same as the other two it was something special, not at all perfect, but different.
