Re: Game of the Year - preliminary discussion

well, to clarify-XCom is the first game I can remember in a long time, a really long time, that I can sit down and knock out 4+ hours of play without even thinking about it, but yet I can also leave it alone because I don't want to feel like I'm slogging through it.

Second, it's the first game in a really really long time where I am playing right on the line of losing the game, and keeping the thing going by making every decision count.

All the complaints I hear about bad spawns and shooting through walls don't matter to me. It's random maps + the Unreal engine. that it works really well most of the time is good enough for me.

But, like the original, if I get raped on a map, I restart.

I wouldn't mind some color-coded halo effects for my units so that I could quickly see who the snipers and heavies are at a distance to coordinate movements better, but that's my only real complaint. I love the game, got it on sale for 25$, and feel I've been solidly entertained and challenged.

And just to clarify - i have no issue with it being GOTY - it definitely deserves to be in contention.

Re: Game of the Year - preliminary discussion

I'm not going to stop it. My Top 5:

5. Legend of Grimrock
The world in cubes.
4. FTL
Firefly the roguelike!
3. Dragon's Dogma
They mostly come at night, mostly...
2. XCom Enemy Unknown
I spent almost as much time with it this year as with Dark Souls. Almost.
1. and by that my Game of the Year: Spec Ops - the Line
Yes, I'm at least as surprised as you might be. The deconstruction of the modern military shooter, showing everyone how silly this genre actually is.

Game of the Century:
Dark Souls

Now, my annual categories:

Most time spent at character creation: Dragon's Dogma
Seriously: this is the new standard for character creation other games should live up to.

Best story: Spec Ops: the Line
Runner up: Mass Effect 3, Binary Domain

Most disappointing story: Hitman Absolution
From globetrotting contract killer to a Quentin Tarantino-ripoff without any traces of wit.
Runner up: Dishonored

Best ending: Spec Ops: the Line
"What the...? Wait... woah..."

Worst ending: FTL
Quite a letdown after the excellent gameplay until that point.

Most aggravating bossfights: Hotline Miami
RAAAAAAAGE!

Most disappointing bossfight: FTL
Runner up: Diablo 3

Best bossfights: Dark Souls - Artorias of the Abyss DLC
Fighting Kalameet is hands down the most fun I ever had with a boss in a videogame.
Runner up: Dragon's Dogma

Best multiplayer, co-op: Mass Effect 3
Runner up: Diablo 3

Best multiplayer, competitive: Hitman Absolution
For all it's faults the game has, the Contracts mode of Hitman is actually quite fun.

Least playable due to technical issues: The Walking Dead
Could only get it to run with some obtuse tinkering and then I had corrupted savegames not once but already twice. I really don't feel like playing through Episode 1 for the third time. Neither story nor gameplay are good enough for that.

Worst DLC: Hitman Absolution
Deus Ex Human Revolution Skin for Contracts mode. Even beats the overpriced XCom soldier customization DLC.

Best DLC: Dark Souls - Artorias of the Abyss
If Pedro wouldn't roll his eyes in knowing complacency, I'd put this DLC in my top 5 games this year, right between... no, above...
Runner up: Mass Effect 3

Most annoying DRM: Games for Windows Live
Seriously, Microsoft: fix that mess. How hard can it be? You're a software company, right? RIGHT?!?

The 'what is the internet on about?' award for game everyone seems to hate but which I enjoyed quite a lot: F1 2012

The 'what is the internet on about?' award for game everyone seems to love but which I didn't get along with: Dishonored

Most angry words shouted at TV due to difficulty: Hotline Miami
Those "bossfights"...

Least interactive game: Journey
Nice movie though. Beat the Walking Dead by a hair's width.

Medal of Honor-Award for most awesome beards: Dragon's Dogma
Tier 1 would be proud!

Biggest disappointment: Hitman Absolution
Runner up: Dishonored

(presumably) First game of 2012 I'll buy in 2013: Far Cry 3

Where did he pull that #1 out of? He just picked an old game?

I'd forgotten about this guy - I used to enjoy his reviews; I must look him up again.

I could pick any number of games for this award. I think I Am Alive might take it this year for me.

Yup; I can't get past Ep2 because a) it doesn't register that I own Ep3, or b) it doesn't see that I have played 1 & 2. One of these two always happens. That is really bad in this day and age.

It's the only DLC I bought in 2012 so I agree!

Dear Esther. You may as well not have been present for Thirty Flights of Loving either. This was definitely the year of 'It's not a game, is it?'

The difference to Hotline Miami is that in Artorias of the Abyss I usually knew why I failed, in HM on the other hand I just died and had no clue what I did wrong. Also: in DaS it's always possible to level up and get better armor, in HM it's always a 1-hit-kill that blasts me off my feet.

These 'games' come and go, just this year they found critical acclaim, while interactive movies of old where laughed at.

It was a bad year for beards. Skyrim last year had much better beards to offer and the beard selection in XCom and Mass Effect 3 was severely lacking. This award was inspired by the Tier-1-beard-wearers of the Medal of Honor-reboot.

Re: Game of the Year - preliminary discussion

We need more votes! Where are Kin Korn Karn, gamevet, Zippy DSMLee? The big hitters?

The fourth best game of the year for me, is......

Endless Space!

As Rob mentions above, it is hard to argue with a game that holds your attention for 4 hours and has you looking at the clock at 3am on a work night thinking, just a couple more turns. That game for me was Endless Space - proof that a good UI can immeasurably improve a game. Of course it also helped that the mechanics were accessible rather than obscure, and jumping right in was interesting and intuitive. The humour was good, the colour text was cool, and the bonuses were interesting. The game was rather let down in a couple of areas which I think are pretty much endemic to 4xes anyway - lack of variation once you discover the 'ideal' tech tree path, and fairly samey gameplay for all the races. But I didn't hit this point until the 36 hour mark, so I am very happy with my #4 pick.

Running Total:

XCOM 10 pts
Spec Ops: the Line 4 pts
Dragon's Dogma 3 pts
FTL 2 pts
Endless Space 2 pts
Legend of Grimrock 1 pt

Nope, Gunlord is a NEW Metroid-style shooter for the Dreamcast. There is a small community of gamers who are self-publishing their own games for the DC.

Re: Game of the Year - preliminary discussion

My third best game of the year is the big release from Ubisoft this year.

Yes, that's right - it's I Am Alive!

If publishers abandoned bloated, overlong games, and produced sub-8 hour games for download at 20 bucks apiece, I'd be delighted.

This was one of those games - short, not so sweet, and introducing interesting mechanics (limited ammo, bluffing) that made the game interesting and new, and also fun to play. Well, fun is an exaggeration - it was a grim struggle from beginning to end, but it was excellent in a lot of ways, and has stayed with me since I played it in March.

Number #3 with a bullet. Wait, I've run out....

Re: Game of the Year - preliminary discussion

Ok, this vote is turning into a bit of a travesty, but we should persevere...

Number 2 on my list is Papo & Yo.

This was really excellent. The gameplay mixes gentle platforming with distinctive visuals, and it's definitely the most colourful game of the year.

More than that though - in a year where many games tried and failed to live up to an artistic vision, this one actually carries it off. There's more journey in this game than in Journey, more guilt, fear and pain than in Dear Esther. And unlike those games, there's a proper resolution, faced head-on.

A superb game.

Re: Game of the Year - preliminary discussion

Game of the Year: Tribes Ascend
I had so much fun with this game. It's a team based multiplayer shooter, but the mechanics are so different (to a first time Tribes player) that it almost feels like a new genre altogether.

Best Individual Moment: Mass Effect 3
I almost chose this as my Game of the Year based solely on how perfectly Mordin's mission played out in my particular playthrough of the game. I made dozens of choices over the course of the entire series that all helped shape this scene, and it still played out perfectly. It was a surprising highpoint in a series that already had the strongest storytelling and characters I've ever seen in a game.

Most Fun to Talk about: XCom: Enemy Unknown
Everyone has their own stories to tell about the desperate situations they got into and the important decisions and sacrifices they had to make as a result. It's also refreshing to have a game difficult enough to actually warrant bragging about.

Most Time Spent on Character Creation: Guild Wars 2
I still don't know if I actually like Guild Wars 2, or MMOs in general (guild wars 2 is my first). So far I think the game itself is a bit of a mess. But I love my characters. I've created five so far, one from each race, and I return to the game every couple of weeks solely because I miss them.

I don't even play the game, really. The game's been out for months, and my highest character is at level 17. I just like running around and posing in front of cool scenery in various outfits. Honestly, I might as well be playing with dolls.

Most Time Spent: Skyrim
I haven't even gotten to any of the DLC yet either. There's a decent chance this could be my most played game next year too.

It you're looking for a top 5 list for ranking purposes, I'd go:

1. Tribes: Ascend
2. Mass Effect 3
3. XCom: Enemy Unknown
4. Guild Wars 2
5. Hero Academy

I guess. I play more games than anyone I know, and I still don't play enough to actually make a top 5 list each year, especially if you want to limit it to games released that year. There's always more on the "top" list than off of it.
