Re: Last movie impressions

recently picked up Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on bluray. Not the most detailed image, but the improved contrast and color saturation is certainly a welcome improvement.

It's the only movie that still makes me laugh out loud during the fight scenes, because they are such fun.

As I get older, this film is definitely in my top 10 films of all time. It's got everything.

Also watched the 11 episode anime Eden of the East. Quite excellent. Social commentary story about fixing the world by giving random strangers enormous sums of money. Similar in feel to X-Files episodes.. alot of macguffins and no real answers, but still an enjoyable ride.

Re: Last movie impressions

Buddenbrooks (2008)
Telling the story of the Buddenbrook family in the 19th century.
The first half focuses on the daughter with her unhappy choices in husbands, the second on the older brother who contrary to his other brother has to step in his fathers shoes and lives in the view of others a successful live...
I think the director wasn't able to crop the story properly without loosing important details and loosing the mood. (although i don't know the book) But it felt fragmented although longer than the cinema cut.

Knocked Up
A bit clichéd with the man are funny and have to change to take some responsibility while woman are by default more grown up, but it's a funny comedy and that's the premise.

Just Friends
Have to love Anna Faris' caricature of this slightly crazy popstar bimbo. The rest, the main story, is mediocre.

Santa Claus 3
Definitely one sequel too much.

Cool Runnings
Charming film.

Mamma Mia!
Chicago got an Oscar. Mamma Mia! not. Mamma Mia!
Abba songs in Muriels wedding were already awesome, there the mood of the songs was better interwoven, while here their use felt sometimes too artificial. But the actors were great. Only Brosnan appeared like he wanted to sing Meat Loaf songs or whatever. Amanda Seyfried was just gorgeous although Streep was fine for her age too.

Once Upon a Time in America
Leone together with Morricone make good cinema experiences but i seem do never like the stories of their pictures and music. I fall asleep watching C'era una volta il West and here the characters don't make much sense to me.
He goes as a young man to jail for killing someone in rage and after being released he joins with a shrug his grown up buddies at their murder business and rapes in between of a robbery? WTF! What happened in jail?
His early love likes him, because of what? Only because he is peeping her? She even does the same thing as Sally Jupiter / Silk Spectre in Watchmen but without any explanation if it's really based on the same motivation.
Maybe it's a movie were the viewer is supposed to fill in the gaps, but imo a movie has to do that in another way when it gives that order.

August Rush
The tale of the boy is a "little bit" implausible, but it's about the beauty of music, the strength of love and the kitsch of happy endings.
If you can't engage in schmaltzy stories you better not watch it.

The Associate
Could be better with a better, faster script.

Kung Fu Panda
I usually like even crappy martial arts movies so i have to love it when the tiger fight style is now actually performed by a tiger.

The Secret Garden
The plot might have been a bit unrealistic but it think the message of the movie just was that you shouldn't surrender to disasters and duck always, you have to allow change sometimes if you want to enjoy your life. Nice.

Max Payne
I actually liked how they explained and displayed the Valkyr effects and the more realistic painkiller by plain duty to survive, ok, but why did they change so much of the story and why not just use 1:1 the shot style the game had in some scenes? Especially the flashbacks were hollow.
Again, as it seems as always, a missed opportunity.

Casino Royale (1966)
First fuck up was done by the TV station by cutting out parts of the movie. (without a reason) SAW2 in the FSK18 version was ridiculous with missing scenes but that's due to youth laws in germany but leaving out whole scenes in a comedy...?
The movie itself was bad. The jokes were most of the times just lame. The idea of the real James Bond that persiflages the other Bond character was great, especially liked the joke article agent line, which pretty much summarizes my disliking of pre-Craig Bonds, but the plot was irritatingly nonsensical even for its parody goal.

Bourne Ultimatum
The better Bond. Period.

Lemony Snicket
I don't like malicious movies, i can't stand it when the evils have one success after another against the good characters. No problem with e.g. Mafia movies were the hero of the movie is the evil person. But when the good guys are tortured throughout the movie that's attacking my beliefs.
Beside that i liked everything.

Universum: Erster auf dem Everest (first on the Everest)
A reconstruction of what probably happened to George Mallory and Andrew Irvine and if they eventually have reached the top 1924.
There are better Universum episodes, this was rather messed up with some play scenes, CSI comments on the found old equipment and the documentary footage of the search expedition for the dead bodies.

L'uomo delle stelle
A beautiful movie about an asshole who actually steals from poor people by making them want to become a movie star and he pretends to do sample takes for a movie company.

Bee Movie
not as bad as some Nickelodeon crap but hardly better
For Kids under 7 maybe good i guess.

Nordwand
Nature against human, the Eiger north face showing muscles while 4 men try to climb for the first time to its top 1936. Impressive movie based on facts.
Reality often writes better scripts than anything Hollywood has come up with. The end is just unbelievable...

Some1 spent too much time in front of the telly at X-Mas?

I despise Mamma Mia! and found it horrible, atrocious and started reading a book while the movie was still running. Most of the actors should have taken a couple more singing lessons.

The other movie I watched this holiday season is Trois couleurs: Rouge, which is a beautiful French movie about... uhm... life I guess. It made me order the DVD set with all 3 movies so it can be considered quite good I think

If there wouldn't be family gatherings and gaming the list could have been longer.

For me it was sort of a Karaoke film, so i don't think it did matter if they could sing or not.
I'm also no one who hears the difference between a terrible mp3 version or flac format. At least i don't care much.
And the Abba sound is imo hard to screw up. It just makes me smile- even the melancholy, almost depressive songs-, and especially here when they start to sing every few minutes in moments it barely seemed to fit.

Mamma Mia!

I hear the difference between a terrible mp3 version and a good mp3 version. But I'm no audiophile by any stretch of imagination.

However, I found some of the songs in Mamma Mia! just cringeworthy. Which is fine when I'm in a karaoke-bar and some friends try to babble the lyrics to total eclipse of the heart past midnight. But I don't like to watch something like this completely sober and in the comfort of my own living room (coincidentally, this is the sole reason I don't own Singstar )

Re: Last movie impressions

Semi Pro
I like Ferrell but while Blades of Glory and Ricky Bobby had some hilarious moments here it was too often lame.

The Haunting of Molly Hartley
Kind of funny how hard it tried to be surprising. At least it got my attention. I just had to know how they want to unscrew this screw up.

Fuk sau (Vengeance)
Mememto + Leon + a little Straight Story could have been great but... an aging chef seeking vengeance for his almost died daughter, her killed husband and children that were attacked by hitmen in Hongkong. The action was stupid. In one scene they are able to shoot on a bicycle to keep it rolling on itself and in the actual action sequences it's good old bang, bang and no one hits anything most of the time.
The style was often great, but the mysterious chef with increasingly memory issues and obviously some history in shooting didn't work for me.

Hancock
The humorous beginning was fine, but the drama that rather abruptly kicks in felt out of tune. Not because i necessarily wouldn't be able to accept the switch in genre, but good drama takes more than Smith being curious on his forgotten past and Theron explaining it to him in rather short scenes.
I think Hancock should have stayed until the end the only superhero, like Batman Begins were the main character got enough time to be introduced. The Mr. and Mrs. Superman sequel could have had then a still humorous tone at the beginning and after that they could have done this greek god mythical thing that was discharged too fast here.
For me almost like a pilot movie that tried to tell the whole first season in under 2 hours.

Thumbs up Re: Last movie impressions

yah Hancock did have plot timing issues which was sad because I felt other aspects were so confident. The script it was based on, 'Tonight he comes', has been floating around Hollywood for awhile. It's one of those completely unapproachable-yet-someone-always-tries projects. (google it, theres a PDF of the whole script online you can read - its interesting!)
I thought it was ok.

Recently got the Oliver Stone 'Nixon' on bluray. Not a huge improvement in looks (the film uses alot of soft contrast), but it does include some worthwhile added sequences.. the bizarre meeting between Nixon and Jesse Helms (chief of the CIA), for example.

And an absolutely amazing character study, in acting and detail. Dark, excellent, underrated film.

Re: Last movie impressions

Watched the other 2 parts of the Trois couleurs trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski. Three Colors: Blue and Three Colors: White. Really good movies showing people who try to get their act together after suffering loss.

Re: Last movie impressions

Watched Repo Men (not to be mistaken with Repo - the genetic opera, which has a similar premise but completely different execution) and was pleaseantly surprised. A good movie overall. Not a great movie, mind you, nothing that will set the world on fire. But a solid movie with a good cast - Jude Law, Forest Whitaker and Liev Schreiber make a solid trio for the movie to base on. I am pleased by the fact that they didn't botch the ending. A glance at the imdb-boards also showed me that surprisingly many didn't watch the movie 'till the end and started bitching about it or simply didn't understand what it meant. The latter is baffling to me, since it's not exactly rocket science.

Re: Last movie impressions

Das Fremde in mir (probably: The alien in(side) me? or stranger?)
It's about a couple getting their first child, a planned child and they are happily excited. But after the birth the mother can't connect to her child, she feels not like she intended to, she feels actually nothing. Each day were she has to pretend to be a loving mother is getting harder and while feeling helpless, not loving her child isn't something she can admit to anyone. The daily housework, getting some milk or tidy up, is neglected, instead she is constantly thinking what's wrong, crying feeling inadequate.
One day she silently slips out of their bed early in the morning, gets away from her town and lays herself down in a forest, to die...

Impressive take on the problem many mothers have after giving birth. The documentation that ran afterwards said iirc 10-15% of all mothers have postpartum depression (one doctor claimed that too much use of pharmaceuticals, not giving natural birth is the major cause) and some cannot escape that phase because society or they themselves demand that they have to enjoy being mother which makes it even more difficult when those supposed to be natural feelings are not appearing. Or they drown in fear of doing it as bad as they have their own childhood in memory. Or they want everything inhumanly perfect.

Duel
Being chased on the road for no reason, feeling helpless because no one witnesses it, ok, fine idea, but the driving and many actions are just weird and funny. The truck cruising without a problem at 100mph, always in a straight line and he in his car constantly acts like he is rally racing in Monte Carlo. But the best comedic scene is when he walks to that guy in the dinner and just says: "stop "it"". That's something i'd expect in Scary Movie when one screaming girl would walk to the killer and after a hesitating moment ask to stop killing her. Hilarious.
For a beginner movie quite good and the idea would deserve a proper remake, but it's only a unintentionally funny thriller for me.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Liked it, although the couple quarrel was annoying. Movies should stop to bring in some action through pairs that seem to always split up in between movies and then always find back together.

I hate [i]Die Another Day[i] on two accounts. The first of which, [i]Die Another Day[i] is an atrocity of a film -- easily the worst film of Pierce Brosnan's mediocre run as 007. [i]Die Another Day[i] may be the worst Bond film period.

What I hate even more about [i]Die Another Day[i] is that it's essentially GoldenEye (Brosnan's only respectable 007 film) set in Korea instead of Russia. Watch the two films side by side, and you can see many similarities.

Continuing on with Bond...

Casino Royale -- the Daniel Craig film, not the David Niven farce (see below) -- is awesome. Unfortunately, Quantum of Solace, while not a terrible film, is a disappointing follow-up. I'm hoping whoever directs Bond's next expedition continues from CR as if QoS never existed.

And even MORE James Bondage...

Certainly guilty pleasure material, if only for Herb Alpert's music.

(And, yes, [i]Die Another Day[i] is still worse.)

How does it compare to Repo? I always thought Repo had an excellent premise, but I thought the film itself, while interesting and original, wasn't that great. It certainly doesn't deserve the cult following it has gained, in my book.

The Big Lebowski

A film I've intended to watch for a few years now, as everybody seems to praise it. And I can see why. The plot was pretty cool; it kept you guessing, and there were twists and turns ensureing you were never going to guess exactly what was going on. But it is the characters that make this film, from the Dude to Mister Lebowski and his assitant, and from the psychotic Germans to Walter (who could well be the best character ever created). One of the funniest films I've seen in a long time, excellent. 9/10

It does much more with the premise. The overall plot is not much more complex, but it's better implemented and in my book it helps when the cast doesn't spontaneously burst into singing and dancing every 5 minutes. I know, some people here beg to differ...

Overall I enjoyed Repo Man much more than Repo. Plus it doesn't have Paris Hilton in it.

I HATE musicals normally, believe me... my missus tried to get me to watch Bedknobs & Broomsticks the other day (it's a film she's obsessed with from her childhood, my girlfriend isn't nine years old or something), and I told her to "F' right off, you can shove a broomstick up your A'" (I'm being extra careful with my language because of this "moderating every post" thing...)

Anyway, I rather enjoyed the musical aspect of Repo, even if most of the songs weren't very good. It was quirky. I just didn't like the characters, especially that whino teenage girl in the lead role.

And, of course... ergh, Paris Hilton
