From Combat evolved to the famous half life and halo 3 with its revolutionary multiplayer does ODST the latest game in the Halo franchise live up to its legacy? It follows the story of the ODSTís during the events of halo 2 and 3. You do not assume the role of Master Chief as in previous Halos. You assume the role as The Rookie. In the campaign the goal as the rookie is to go around and find your missing teammates. You go around New Mombasa looking for bits of evidence left by a teammate. When you find the evidence a flashback occurs and you are put into the shoes of that teammate. When you complete the game you can choose any mission and complete again on a harder difficulty setting. ODST uses a different damage mechanic to halo 3. It uses stamina so if you are hit your screen flashes red and when you reach your maximum stamina limitation you take permanent damage which can only be healed by medpacks scattered around the game. There is a new VISR mode which lights up the dark environments and lets you see allies in green, enemies in red and important objects in yellow.
Basically you awaken as the rookie six hours after your pod crashed. After escaping the pod you walk around New Mombasa until the superintendent helps you out. You explore Mombasa streets looking for the evidence left by the teammates. The music is a very good score and really makes you feel lonely and scared. It may add a mystery element to the game but it can be very, very frustrating looking for the objects time and time again after every mission. There are some bad guys to kill but overall it isnít great. When you finally find the first item you play the mission Tayari Plaza. You take control of Buck looking for Dareís crash site. It isnít a bad mission but it lacks spark. If you stick with the game up to Uplift Rescue than the rest of the levels including Uplift Rescue are phenomenal. From going around in a banshee to driving a Scorpion or escorting an elephant it couldnít get much better. The graphics are a lot better in the light areas of the game than the dark.
Tip; donít wear your VISR in the daytime levels as you will be blinded.
Overall the campaign is brilliant but walking around at night looking for stuff just isnít that fun but if you like halo and you like vehicles than this game is perfect for you. The campaigns difficulty goes from easy to legendary just like Halo 3. You can of course replay the game on a harder difficulty yourself or replay it with your friends but you donít unlock new armour like Halo 3.
ODST is a 2 disc game. The first disc has the campaign and the second disc called the mythic disc has every single multiplayer released for Halo 3 as well as the ones available at Xbox Marketplace and 3 new maps. Now for the price tag of £40 or $60 I would expect more than 3 new maps. I can understand it being compatible with Halo 3 but bungie seem to have made a mistake when only bothering to make 3 new maps. Still the multiplayer is phenomenal like always but it makes disc 2 pretty pointless.
ODST has a new mode called firefight where you play in one of the 10 maps and try to kill wave after wave of monster by yourself or with other people. The only problem is that it is invite only so there is no matchmaking system which is poor. It increases in difficulty making it hard to complete it yourself.
