Re: Suggest an album.

La Roux

I was going to recommend this album earlier. People (in the US) are probably familiar with it from the Bayanetta commercial.

La Roux is a #1 artist in the UK. This video had over 6 million views on YouTube before the Bayonetta commercial.

It was my favorite pop album of 09.

Re: Suggest an album.

I know that ckz likes bands like My Bloody Valintine, so I thought I'll post some other "shoegaze" bands.

Slowdive "Alison"

Ride "Vapour Trail"

Love Spirals Downward "Write in Water"

Love Spirals is more ethereal, but it is in the same realm.

Re: Suggest an album.

I worship Slowdive, never cared too much about Ride and didn't know Love Spirals Downwards - they remind me of Lycia. But, yeah, I love dream pop. Thanks, abfackeln. There's a film by Gregg Araki, Mysterious Skin, that captures a lot of the atmosphere of these bands. It also deals with extremely unpleasant subjects which I won't spoil, but try to see it. I remember it being one my favorite films of the year when it was released.

Yes it is, Rob. I love Robin Guthrie's reverbed guitars!

Re: Suggest an album.

I like nearly everything Michael Andrews (Donnie Darko) has done, including this minimalist electronic score. The opening track w/the poem by Miranda July is just a terrific morning music meditation...

if you really love me, let's make a vow.
right here, together, right now. okay?

(okay)

alright, repeat after me. i'm gonna be free.

(i'm gonna be free.)

and i'm gonna be brave.

(i'm gonna be brave.)

good. i'm gonna live each day as if it were my last.

(oh, that's good.)

you like that?

(yeah)

say it.

(i'm gonna live each day as if it were my last.)

fantastically.

(fantastically.)

courageously.

(courageously.)

with grace.

(with grace.)

and in the dark of the night...

(and it does get dark.)

when i call a name

(when i call a name)

it'll be your name... what's your name?

(nevermind.)

let's go. say it.

(let's go.)

everywhere.

(everywhere.)

even though

(even though)

we're scared.

(we're scared.)

cause it's life.

(it's life.)

and it's happening. it's really really happening, right now...

Re: Suggest an album.

I put both of the movies that you guys recommended in my queue.

Here is one of my favorites from back when I was in high-school.

Re: Suggest an album.

Watched Mysterious Skin last night. Really good movie with a great soundtrack. Both the original score and licensed music were great.

Any modern movie with Curve in it gets an A in my book.

Re: Suggest an album.

Curve! I was almost sure you would like it. A lot of Slowdive vibes in there. The acting is superb.

Re: Suggest an album.

Two new albums which after a first listen are granted the ckz approval seal for repeated listens:

Four Tet: There is love in you
Jagga Jazzist: One armed-bandit

Re: Suggest an album.

More great recommendations Rob and ckz.
I have seen Four Tet in person a few times.

I picked up the 2008 Jazzanova record "Of All the Things" today. It is pretty incredible. Kind of hard to believe that these guys are from Germany. Kind of sound like they're from 1960s Detroit.

Here is another great white guy doing Detroit sounding soul.

Jamie Lidell

Re: Suggest an album.

That was pretty great Rob.

It reminded me of Steve Reich's phasing technique

crossed with the Doll's Polyphony from the Akira soundtrack... for some reason...
