I'd be pretty sure you didn't need to do that QTE at the end several times. It is, and I consider this a compliment to Infinity Ward, easy to accomplish.

(But I still think it's a bad move. As I've heard and repeated: A good game builds its climax as the logical conclusion of all skills the game has taught you previously.)

Re: The Masturbatory OMG Modern Warfare 2 Thread

Crispy Gamer is owning the Modern Warfare 2 criticism.
The most disappointing thing about Modern Warfare 2 is how poorly the single-player campaign lives up to the previous game. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a trenchant, canny, shrewdly told story about the nature of warfare in the modern world. Now Modern Warfare 2 is a confused mishmash of levels minus any real connective tissue, much less any sort of overarching narrative...

When it's all over, it makes no sense. This thing is about as comprehensible as a Metal Gear Solid game, but without the benefit of being Japanese, meta, or slow. It's not clear who's doing what to whom, why you're going anywhere, what you're doing there, how this mission relates to that mission, who that guy is, or why Price is reciting some sort of bad LiveJournal poetry during the last few missions...

There's no doubt that Modern Warfare 2 is going to be one of the biggest multiplayer shooters ever. It deserves it. It's that good. It's just too bad that Infinity Ward couldn't rise to the occasion of offering more to folks who aren't as interested in online play. Because as a single-player sequel to Call of Duty 4, this is one of the most disappointing follow-ups in videogaming history.

When I first heard about the mission, I will confess, I was skeptical. The talented people at Infinity Ward may have no peers when it comes to gameplay- and multiplayer-level design, but complex moral experiences have not exactly been an emblem of the Call of Duty franchise. In short, these games peddle a creed of salvation by M-16, in which you do the right -- and instantly apparent -- thing, and then bask in a heroic swell of music. I have now played through "No Russian" several times and behaved differently each run through it. My skepticism, I believe, was warranted. About the best one can say about "No Russian" is that it is morally confused and dramatically lazy. Yes, of course, it is affecting and provocative -- but so is purposefully stomping on someone's big toe. This is essentially what "No Russian" does when it desperately needs to do much, much more.

I am not only really impressed by these reviews because the second one agrees with me that Far Cry 2 made the basic alleged point of the No Russian mission with a lot more style and substance.

Yeah, that scared me. I afraid was going to be playing some rock band style gameplay to finish up MW2.

Right left two three,
up down four five,
mouse button right,
mouse button left.

That would have been terrible. Especially since im no good at that, and would to have repeated it several times (watching the movies play over and over).

Watching a cutscene over and over, because you failed a gameplay element is really annoying.

Is it even possible to fail that part? I was not particularly quick with my button presses, and I still skated by with ease.

I'd assume if you miss that last throw, it'd have to fail you.

(End vague hopefully spoilerfree comments.)

Extra comments:

Not only did Far Cry 2 do the violence commentary better, I'd argue the Xbox 360 version of Splinter Cell: Double Agent did a lot of the same better too. I'm thinking of the scene with the helicopter pilot, in particular.

Re: The Masturbatory OMG Modern Warfare 2 Thread

Slate.com dips its toe into the ring.

I'm unimpressed. His major thesis -- That Modern Warfare 2 attempts to make you feel bad about pulling the trigger rather than excited -- feels counter to my own experiences with the game. Furthermore, that was the entire modus operandi of Far Cry 2, which did that same trick far more organically and effectively. (As noted by Tom Bissell and others. OK, OK. Others.) I don't feel that this is a particularly good appraisal.

I actually skipped the skippable parts.
Maybe because i was completely ignoring the story anyway.

The only unpleasant part I had was shooting the dogs. Poor puppies.

I wonder if he was just throwing the knife for shits and giggles and got lucky, or was he was cheating.

Killzone 2 has great multiplayer too.
Aye, I think MW basically replaced CS for the current generation of gamers. It seems to have stolen the community and it's well deserved. It was the first gun game I've played since CS that just felt right.

I'm still reluctant to pick up MW2 for PS3 though. Shooters are so huge on the 360, I feel like I'd be joining the "second choice" of online communities.

After spending over 100 hours with MW on the 360 and close to 20 hours with MW2 on the PS3 I really can't tell the difference. The only benefits I see with XBLA is new maps sooner and the controller.

My options were either to pay $50 for a Xbox Live subscription or spend $50 on another game. I chose another game and happy I did.
