Re: Torchlight
I didn't have 2+ minute load times when I finally started playing last night, but they were definitely lengthy enough that I never wanted to portal back to town...
I thought I saw that they released a patch yesterday.
So far, I like the game. It's everything I expected it to be (which is basically Diablo with WoW's graphics and interface. Is there anywhere in-game that explains some of the enchanting and other game systems though? No instruction manual sucks.

There is a patch. Which addresses both load times, and changing difficulty mid game.
But there are different game clients, based on where you bought the game (and they are not compatible with each other). You need to get the patch from the people you bought it from.
Steam, Runic, Perfect World, Gateway, ect...

Re: Torchlight
Ive installed torchlight on my laptop (1.8Ghz single core, 2GB ram, 64MB video) and it runs fine. I had to turn the graphics down a bit, but not to their lowest settings.
I really need to re-install it again with the patch, because I would like to squeeze out all of the extra performance I can.
[the "patch" involves completely un-installing the game, and reinstalling it. Because the patch is actually a the entire game client repackaged]

Re: Torchlight
I downloaded the game from Steam last night. I wonder if I got the patched version or not...I don't really feel like uninstalling and reinstalling.

Re: Torchlight
Theoretically Steam should auto-patch to the latest version; I just launched Steam and it's updating as I type this. I wonder if the patched version includes the "Respec Potion" previously only available via a mod. I'd love to respec my Warrior but that mod quadruples the loading time.

Re: Torchlight
I'm guessing I got the newest version since I saw the patch notes before I purchased and downloaded the game last night.
That's scary, because I find the load times are pretty hellacious now. I can only imagine what they must have been like if this is an improvement...

The load times were not universally terrible. Some machines took much longer to load than they should have, based on their specs.
And the Pak.zip file, in the installation folder was compressed in a way that windows had a hard time opening. Recompressing that, helped me about x2 with loading times. Even before the patch.
Thats why they basically rereleased the whole client. Im not sure why steam does not have to do the whole install over. Did it recompress the Pak folder manually? (the new Pak folder/file should be 300MB in size).

Re: Torchlight
I just downloaded and played the demo today. I was pretty suspicious when I heard about torchlight the first time. Especially after the nosedive with Hellgate: London. And Borderlands, which was labeled as diablo with guns, which it isn't. As far as I know diablo wasn't a game where the only loot you could get was better bow's and arrows.
And diablo had some spectacle to it, especially playing the sorceress or playing on higher levels, which I don't see in Borderlands. Torchlight has the spectacle. Right after the first time using Richochet with the Vanquisher I was seeing myself getting the full version on steam. But I wasn't sure until I tried the Alchemist I named Fullmetal with the cat Cleopatra. The ember shock sold me. And the look at the skill trees. I was always fascinated by the idea of having a spellcaster in melee combat and the Alchemist enables just that. While in most other games spellcasters are glass cannons and not much else, here I can get upclose and personal with all the small monsters and still stay at range if some monster proves to be to strong in melee. All while Cleopatra is healing and raising monsters.

Re: Torchlight
Indeed, there's something utterly charming about zombie-summoning cat.

Re: Torchlight
I had no idea the cat was different. I went with the dog...
Time to make a new character, apparently.

Re: Torchlight
I don't think there's a difference between the cat and the dog apart from aesthetics. You could assign a Summon Zombie spell to either pet. Any spell, ring, or necklace actually, as far as I know.

Re: Torchlight
I was pretty far into the game, so I go to log in tonight and I get an exe error on Steam. I try clicking Torchlight directly, get the same error message.
No big deal, I think--I'll just uninstall Steam and reinstall it. Unfortunately, it uninstalled Torchlight with it. So, looks like I'm starting from scratch. I'm already not a fan of the digital download bullshit, and this isn't helping to convert me to the cause...

Re: Torchlight
Nice. I bitched too soon. When I reinstalled and booted it up, my character was still saved. Crisis averted, hurray!

Re: Torchlight
If you keep a backup copy of the steamapps folder handy when you uninstall steam, you can just paste the files in the appropriate spot after you reinstall the client. That way you won't have to re-download your games.

Re: Torchlight
I must say I'm tempted to get this. I want to hold out for Diablo 3 but I'm increasingly getting the sense that D3 won't be released till summer 2475.
One question though, what about the multiplayer. I understand that its still in development but is there an ETA? Are there also things known about what forms of multiplayer will be offered?
