Question Kinect

Nobody here's going crazy over the Kinect? Anyone got it?

I don't have enough space in my flat to put it (in the Netherlands flats are tiny). To get the 1.8m needed as a minimum I would have to throw my table out of the window. To play it with someone else (that means minimum of 2.5 meters) I would have to throw out my sofa as well, break through the wall behind it and play from my neighbors flat.

Re: Kinect

Space is definitely an issue, but also screen size. Even if you did manage to clear the space for it, you are out of luck if you have a small television. You will be so far away from the TV that you can't really see what's going on.

Definitely a device for big screens and big houses. It's a suburban toy.

Re: Kinect

I have it, and its works well enough. Kinect Adventures gets you moving, and will make you sore the next day, unless you are used to running an obstacle course. Dance Central is what you think it is. I don't care for the music, but its a neat program that will help you get your groove on. My favorite tracks are those from the 80s...

Re: Kinect

I'm getting a Wii 2.0 vibe from it. When random non-gamers at work are talking about getting one, I'm pretty sure MS has struck some kind of chord.

I'm betting it'll follow the same arc as the Wii too.

Re: Kinect

anyone else wondering why Kinect is written in the end of this Deus Ex Trailer
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/pe...deus-ex/707555
(and Move not)

TrackIR 5 like support for shooters would be a fine usage in "hardcore" games. (added to pad standard gameplay) Then it suddenly will be almost cheap, at least compared to the price of that device.

To answer the initial question: no, not with the current games were only Dance central seems to be fun.

Re: Kinect

I don't have Kinect for the same reason I don't have a Wii: i'm not a housewife, I don't have kids, I never had a hometrainer and I play games when I'm too tired or lazy to move more than a couple of fingers. I don't want to fail my game because I can't stop shoveling doritos into my face.

Most of the games seems to be geared towards playing with the family or at a party anyways. I'm probably either too old or too young for that.

Re: Kinect

My girlfriend got one today. Space is in fact an issue if you want to play two-player, but she got it for Dance Central and Your Shape Fitness which is really just single player. Works fine without much of a fuss.

I had the wii, and I understand your daughter's opinion. Anyway, I think that MS deserves still a chance. If in the next few months we don't see really good games for the kinect system, then we will have strong reasons to say that kinect has been just a MS marketing trick. Time will say.

Re: Kinect

It has become a bit quite around the kinect. Where are the games and new experiences that were promised for it?

E3 will show?
I'm looking forward to play Forza with this air wheel... er... not.

So far Move underperformed it's imho ok (but often just optional) software support, while Kinect was bought just for Dance Central (and some future (!?) games).
Maybe it's everything people wanted for the 100 whatever dollars, but Nintendo at least did not say that their balance board would revolutionize gaming. So MS has to show something.

Re: Kinect

The main mistake that microsoft did was releasing the kinect so early so that they didn't have that many games coming out to supplement the kinect. The kinect definitely CAN revolutionize gaming, the main problem is, from a developers point of view if they make a kinect based game they are bringing up their costs of development and limiting their target market further (me not having a kinect anymore because the damn ex took it in the breakup, I won't buy any kinect game until I have one because the gameplay simply won't be good enough without it even though games will be controller compatible). So it comes down to just how many incentives microsoft offers and how much support they give to get the devs working on kinect games.

On a side note, the more fire sony gets for the PSN debacle the better microsoft will look. It won't help us now, but devs are aware that there are a lot of people jumping ship to xbox and that will help them justify in their company coming out with more kinect games. Too bad we won't see that ripple come through for another few years though.

Will definitely be interesting how much of a backlash Sony will have to suffer due to that incidence, but Kinect only is imo primarily for first partys and for cheap shovelware games with some exceptions. Similar to the wii.
Multiplatformgames have to work with standard controls. The problem of the wii was the lacking HW-power and online support, so it was either ignored completely or got a rather poor port. Doing all or even optional Kinect controls seem hard, because "you're the controller" is completely different than "it does buttons". Doing optional Move support is rather easy, at least for shooters.

Afaik the Ps3 has overtaken the Box just this year in worldwide sales. So suddenly ignoring the PS, when for some months the statistics told that more and more users own a PS3, is not going to happen and i guess the PSN issue won't have an impact on sales numbers for longer than current and next month.

The thing is... next time Microsoft has bad press people will jump to the other side. And back again. I doubt that the PSN debacle will have any effect on Kinect games. Or did the RROD increase the amount of PS3 first party games? I doubt that there is a connection.

Well micro-econ teaches us that everything in business is connected. Working for a pet store company even I'm affected by the fact that video gaming is becoming more and more mainstream in society because we're both competing for disposable income. It really is hard to tell how much of an impact there is between the two, but the longer the PSN stays down people the frustration level will go up at a geometric rate.

I have to feel sorry for them though because half of it is not their fault and aside from the delay in telling people that their information might be compromised they have handled it relatively well. Realistically, if a group of hackers decide that they want to get into a database, with enough time they will succeed so PSN was doomed to be hacked from square one and it would be foolish of them to just put the PSN up right away without at least trying to shore up their defences a lot first to at least make it harder for the hackers to get in.
