Cool Favorite Videogame Soundtracks?

Do you like videogame music? I remember from the PSOne launch taking the CDRoms for Tomb Raider and Wipeout and listening to the music on my CD player and marveling at how game music had grown up.

I think the Myst soundtracks, which started as experimental ambient projects, have had alot of effect on that genre of game music..

fast forward to now and soundtracks have all manner of quality.. this piece from Rise of the Argonauts reminds me of the Gladiator soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard...

Akira Yamaoka with the Silent Hill series created a videogame score, part ambient/part industrial, that redefined what sound could evoke in games..

sometimes game music is just so beautiful I can't stand it...

what are your favorite game soundtracks?

Re: Favorite Videogame Soundtracks?

Good topic.

For me, its Street Fighter 2. Loved the OSTs that came out of that one. I can still hum out each stage/character tune almost in its entirety.

Final Fantasy VI and any Dragon Quest rocks also.

For more old school, loved Wing Commander and Sorcerian, too really early games that really took advantage of that little oddity known as the sound card.

Re: Favorite Videogame Soundtracks?

The soundtracks that stand out the most to me would probably be:

Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack
Final Fantasy X Piano Collection (which is better than the original in my opinion)

One specific soundtrack I've always loved as a kid was Flashback for the Amiga.

Other soundtracks I like:

Chrono Trigger (I love the resurrection version too)
Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy 8 Orchestra Version
Wipeout 2097

Re: Favorite Videogame Soundtracks?

Wow, some good choices in this thread.

Grant Kirkhope is responsible for some of my favorite soundtracks in video games. I carry a good bit of his work on my mp3 player. His work can be found in many Rare games -- here are my favorites:

Banjo Kazooie/Tooie/Nuts & Bolts
Perfect Dark
Viva Pinata/Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise

Viva Pinata in particular is a personal favorite. The night music is simply beautiful:

Banjo Tooie's still holds up well. This is from the Hailfire Peaks level:

Cybrmynd mentioned Crono Trigger -- also very good.

Re: Favorite Videogame Soundtracks?

Chrono Trigger Resurrection - Theme Song

FF8 Orchestra - Fisherman's Horizon

FFX Piano Collections - Attack

Flashback - Journal

I had to upload a video myself, as I couldn't find a specific track to Flashback.

Flashback - Intro

Bust A Groove

Yes, it's pretty cheesy, but the songs were catchy enough to dig it.

Re: Favorite Videogame Soundtracks?

Still love the trailer, the idea of the game and this track of it. Hope they will make ME2 in near future.

Randomly picked one Anno 1701 track. There is no single tune that isn't well done in the whole series.

Anno 1404, even better than 1701 because now oriental tunes accompany the occidental ones.

Tilman Sillescu, fantastic composer!
Some track even entered the real world classic charts after release!

Kai Rosenkranz, the only employee of Piranha Bytes that does his work without bugging it.

Nintendo always does great music, but Super Metroid was their masterpiece

It just perfectly fits the game

One of the very rare main themes i listened to the end every time i started the game.

I actually don't like ridiculous "singing", but this is a Nintendo game, just have to love it.

this game kicks GTAs ass

i used a part from it as my ring tone for some time

Re: Favorite Videogame Soundtracks?

reminds me somehow of Tim Burtons style.

I liked already the raw version of this: bridge builder, but this was pure geniality.
