Well written review, the only problem I have with it is your actual opinion of the game, rather than the way it is written (which is actually a good thing!).

Mass Effect has a great story and tone, like you say, and some well used RPG elements... but the extremely poor quality of side-content (using that God-awful Mako to explore barren planets being a real low point), ridiculously stupid AI and poor early game pacing (linear-like Eden Prime to an overwhelming Citadel with information, characters and quests bombarding you from every angle) prevent the game from being anything above 7/10 for me.
