I don't know of too menu driven rpg's without random battles except the chrono trigger/chrono cross series. There's also super mario rpg/paper mario.
But if you're talking about non-menu driven...

I for one have been a big fan of the scrolling shooter genre for a while now. Of all the genres they do tend to push you into that zen state of mind pretty easily....plus they're usually challenging...
