Metroid without Yokoi

If you're wondering what Metroid Fusion might be like without Gunpei Yokoi, check out Wario Land 2 and 3. The same team made the Metroid and Wario Land series. Yokoi supervised Metriod 1-3 and Wario Land 1. After he left, his team made Wario Land 2 and 3, which were still pretty good. So I'd say that Metroid Fusion is in good hands.

It's not so much Metroid Fusion I'm concerned about but Metroid Prime. I can't see how it's going to equal Super Metroid in the gameplay stakes. If anyone wants to prove me wrong, bear in mind that all you've seen up to this point are a bunch of screenshots and a few direct-feed videos which bear only a passing resemblance to the SNES game - certain game series never work in 3D, and Metroid might just be like Castlevania in this respect - that it doesn't work in 3D.

The fact that it's being developed by Retro Studios - a developer with not even one game behind its belt - and has only minimal input from Miyamoto-san doesn't exactly bode well either. Call me cynical, but judging from what I've seen so far, Metroid Prime has the potential to be a huge disappointment.

Actually.......

1.Metroid Prime was playable at E3 and received high praise.

2.Miyamoto has some of his crew working full time on Metroid Prime.

;)

Let's hope so. I still have the feeling that Miyamoto's involvement in Metroid Prime turns out to be just as insignificant as it was in Shadows of the Empire, but like everyone I want to see a good Metroid as much as the next person.

There's really no need to doubt that Metroid will be good at this point. Nintendo's shown it to the masses and allowed them to have hands on experience with it and the masses have say 'H*LL YEAH'.

Aside from other people's oppinions though, you can take a look at this page to see what the control scheme is actually like. Seeing how the control's are laid out took away every concern that I had towards the game.

You'll notice that there is only one control stick used to control movement. But, this is an FPS so you need to straffe also. Well, nintendo's fixed that in that they have you straffe whenever you're 'locked on' to an enemy! That's a feature straight out of Zelda!

I just get the feeling that we're looking at a new design in FP games. Metroid is going to look like your everyday FPS, but it's going to play like a platformer-adventure game.

I wouldn't worry so much about the game being a success, but rather if you can get a copy when it's released. ;)

Miyamoto's Involvement in Metroid

In a recent interview, Miyamoto mentioned that 3 people in EAD work on Metroid Prime everyday. Supposedly they are helping a lot with game balance and level design, while Retro's main strength has been the artistic design of the game.

As I recall, Super Metroid was made under Miyamoto's supervision, not Yokoi's. The only two Metroid games by Gunpei Yoki are the original and Metroid 2 on the Game Boy.

--That sounds good. I loved the straffing feature from Zelda.

--Nintendo has stressed that the game is a FPA, or First-Person Adventure. Probably because like you said, it will play like a platformer-adventure game.

Super Metroid Credits

I forget where I got this from, but it also had the credits for Metroid 1 and 2. One thing this list forgets is some credit to "Deer Force of Team Shikamura" or Shimakura.

Shocking!!!

I do hate to be proven wrong, but I have to say Metroid Prime, from the impressions I've been reading is doing much much better than I expected. Granted, my expectations were fairly low to begin with, so it's not saying much.. but I've definitely gone from: "Not a chance in hell will it be in the spirit of Metroid" to guarded optimism, whicb bodes well. I really liked the Wario Land games on the GB/GBC (I forget which - they were my sisters), so I'd imagine Metroid Fusion is in good hands.

I really gotta get me a GBA.. shame my employers felt they didn't have to pay me this month. Pricks.
