New Visitors Welcome Guide – Read Me First

Please note that new accounts that don't post a new thread or reply within 7 days will automatically be deleted due the amount of Spammer accounts created each day. To avoid be having your account deleted, please post something within 7 days of creating your account.

Welcome to the GameCritics.com online community! We recognize that new members are vital to any thriving community. So we deeply appreciate you spending your time with us and we hope your experience here will be a fun and enjoyable one.

To ensure your experience is a positive one, please spend a little time to familiarize yourself with our Code of Conduct and other forum features below.

1) Treat all forum members with respect.
We are committed to keeping the forums a fun and entertaining place for everyone. We are all too familiar with John Gabriel's Greater Internet F*ckwad Theory. So please reframe from behavior that you wouldn’t tolerate within your own home. As the saying goes: “Say onto others as you would have them say onto you.”

2) Post with an open-mind.
Keep in mind that forum members come from all over the world. Chances are you will have differing opinions and that’s a good thing. Why post if you aren’t looking to hear different perspectives other than your own? Don’t post to only reaffirm your own beliefs. Learn from each other’s experiences and expand your horizons.

3) Do not insult and/or harass forum members.
If you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, then keep it to yourself. No matter what the topic of discussion is, there’s no need to resort to personal attacks.

4) Do not incite flame wars.
Do not post any incendiary comments designed to incite flame wars.

5) Do not troll and/or feed the trolls.
Trolling consists of making passive aggressive posts to intentionally get a rise out of other members. Conversely, if you see someone doing this, do not feed the trolls. If you can't ignore it, then report it to a moderator with a private message.

6) Do not post SPAM and/or advertising.
To all the marketers out there, we know who you are so please take your spam elsewhere. Trying to pretend to be someone you’re not only hurts your brand and products.

7) Do not post pornographic, pirated and/or illegal content.
If this is what you are into, you’ve come to the wrong place. This isn’t a forum for these types of content. There are countless other sites that can meet your needs.

8) No excessive whining and/or complaining.
If there’s something you’re unhappy with in regards to our site and/or forums, we are eager to listen to your criticism—so long as it’s well intentioned and constructive. Feel free to express your comments in a public forum or in a private message. We will try our best to address your concerns, but since we have to consider the greater community and the financial costs associated with running the site, we can’t please everyone. So be prepared to let it go. There’s no need to beat a dead horse.

9) Do not create multiple accounts/identities.
Some folks may think it’s hilarious to pretend to be several people, but it is annoying to everyone else in the community and it raises the level of distrust. We are more than happy to merge your accounts for those who have multiple accounts for whatever reason. Just contact a moderator for assistance. Continued use of multiple accounts will result in a banning of all accounts.

Failure to comply with the Code of Conduct may result in one of the following actions being taken:

1) Thread Closing
If at any point, comments made in a thread become pointless, redundant and counter-productive, we may close the thread to prevent any additional posts from being made.

2) Deleted Post/Thread
If a post is deemed to be offensive and/or in violation of the Code of Conduct, we may delete the offending post/thread.

3) Warnings and Infractions
If a poster violates the Code of Conduct, we may also issue warning and infractions. Infractions remain active for 6 months and 3 infractions within that time frame will result in an automatic banning.

4) Ban Hammer
The ban hammer will be dropped on anyone who accumulates 3 infractions within 6 months and/or if they are deemed to be an irredeemable nuisance to the community.

How can I see the latest posts?
There are two ways to quickly view recently created or updated threads. If you are not logged in, the 'today's posts' link at the top of the forum will show a list of all threads that have been created or updated in the last 24 hours. If you are logged in, the 'Today's Posts' link will change to 'New Posts', which gives you a listing of all threads that have been created or updated since your last visit.

How do I achieve a higher “Ranking”?

All forums members are assigned a rank based on their total numbers of posts. That rank is displayed in your public profile and below your username in your posts. Rankings are achieved by accumulating the following amount of posts:

0 posts = New Poster
50 posts = 8-bit Poster
100 posts = 16-bit Poster
250 posts = 32-bit Poster
500 posts = 64-bit Poster
1000 posts = 128-bit Poster
2000 posts = Next-Gen Poster
5000 posts = Enduro Poster

How do I raise my “Reputation”?

All forum members have a Reputation, which allows forum members to provide positive or negative feedback to each others posts. A forum member’s Reputation is made up of two parts: <STRONG>Reputation Level</STRONG> and <STRONG>Reputation Power</STRONG>.

Your Reputation Level (the tiny colored squares below your Avatar) is based on how many total Reputation Points you accumulate, similar to rankings. To give reputation, click on the reputation icon in the relevant post. This will reveal a form to complete with the reputation type and the reason for giving the reputation.

Your Reputation Power (displayed below your avatar as "Rep Power") is how many Reputation Points you are able to award and/or deduct from another forum member’s Reputation. Reputation Power is calculated based on the following criteria:
1) 1 point for every year of registration
2) 1 point for 500 forum posts
3) 1 point for every 100 Reputation Points

For those who do not have Rep Power, the quickest way to raise it is to have those with more Rep Power add to your Reputation.

How many Private Messages can I store?

New accounts will only be allotted 5 private messages in their inbox. Once a user accumulates 25 forums posts, the storage amount of private message will increase significantly.

How do I post YouTube and GameTrailers videos?

In order to display YouTube videos in your post, you must use the following BB code parameters (or click on this icon on the toolbar):

The highlighted characters represent the last 11 characters at the end of the YouTube video URL.
(e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IOhLd68fH4)

In order to display GameTrailers videos in your post, you must use the following BB code parameters (or click on this icon on the toolbar):

The highlighted characters represent the last 5 characters at the end of the GameTrailers video URL.
(e.g. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/55190.html)

Who are the moderators?

A complete listing of moderators and which forums they monitor can be found here.

Please do not hesitate to contact them regarding any questions and/or concerns.
