Virtua Fighter 3 introduced fans to realistic interaction with realistic environments. It was an appealing proposition, as Suzuki and his development team meant to force players to use the terrain to their advantage whenever possible. In a nutshell, it was meant to add more realism to the reality-themed Virtua Fighter franchise. However, the realistic environmental conditions called for changes in fighting dynamic that only hampered gameplay. Needless to say, the stages in Virtua Fighter 4 are flat with no uneven terrain in sight. That hasn't stopped Suzuki from trying to add something new to the series with this release. In the place of uneven terrain, Suzuki has added walls and other barriers that players can interact with during a match. Similar to what we have seen in Tecmo's Dead Or Alive 3, these barriers can be used to pummel an opponent or otherwise give an advantage to someone familiar with the lay of the land. Some of the barriers can even be broken through revealing other parts of the environments.
