As with every previous Virtua Fighter sequel, AM2 has created two new characters to bring the total of selectable characters to 13. The first is the fighting game mainstay, a Shaolin monk, by the name of Lei Fei. The second is a silver-haired, African-American named Vanessa Lewis. Those who enjoyed playing Virtua Fighter 3 may notice that one character has not made the cut this time around. The humongous Sumo wrestler, Taka Arashi, proved too unpopular to be resurrected for the sequel.
