Gran Turismo 3 A-spec Screenshot

The cars in GT3 are composed of over 4,000 polygons per vehicle and are detailed right down to the disc brakes behind the wheels. This shot shows a collision between three cars that kicks up a little street smoke. The center car is realistically leaning to its left from its momentum and from the force of the Mazda RX-7 nudging up against it. What we don't see however are any dents or smudges on the cars' chassis. Despite being known as a driving simulator, the Gran Turismo games have never featured realistic crashes or car damage—most likely because the licensed car manufacturers don't want to see their beautifully realized products blemished. Sadly, it appears as if GT3 isn't going to be the game to break that rule. Negative publicity aside, it's just not realistic for cars to smash into each other at 90 mph and for none of them to have so much as a scratch as a result. Car damage could lead to deeper gameplay in which money must be spent to repair cars before and during races. I guess that would be too realistic though.
