One aspect of Final Fantasy that carries over to this release is the random battles. Even with more detailed settings, larger areas and more detailed characters, Squaresoft still seems to have an aversion to showing enemies and combative creatures on screen with your party. With the new real-time 3-D engine, there is no need for field maps. Now as you encounter a monster, the screen changes to a battle screen. The only time this doesn’t happen is during boss encounters or other key confrontations. In its defense, battle system developer, Toshiro Tsuchida, had expressed a hope that future Final Fantasy titles will be able to integrate seamless transitions between field and battle modes, so there is hope.
