Christ, this looks like a video game site today. Capcom not only announced their Wii games this morning, but also dropped another bomb with the news that Resident Evil 5 will feature competitive multiplayer.
The new mode (called Versus) allows for four players to match up in two different game modes. In Slayer's Rule, players compete to earn points killing Majinis. In Survivors Rule, they hunt each other. I can kind tell which mode is going to be more popular…
The PVP content will be available on Xbox Live (400 MS points) and the PlayStation Network ($3.99) a few weeks after the game's release (which is tomorrow if you're not keeping track…).
We've all been waiting for the Resident Evil Wii news hinted at recently, and today we finally have it.
Capcom announced Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles for Nintendo's popular home console today. The Darkside Chronicles is a brand-spankin' new adventure, a sequel to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.
If that weren't enough zombie slaughtering news, there's more. Capcom also announced new Wii versions of Resident Evil Zero and the GameCube Resident Evil remake as part of a "Resident Evil Classics" line of titles.
As a card-carrying lover of all things zombie, and a huge fan of the old 16-bit game Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I've been keeping tabs on Burn, Zombie Burn! since I first heard about it last year.
The game, from developer Doublesix, features a lead character named Bruce (hurray for more Bruce Campbell references in video games!) who works through multiple stages slaughtering hordes of cartoonish zombies. The title looks to feature parallels between not only Zombies Ate My Neighbors, but also the classic Robotron. The idea is to gather huge masses of zombie together and slaughter them all at once for huge scores and bonus multipliers. I'm so sold on this game that it's not even funny…
Doublesix has (according to Kotaku) planned a big celebration for the game's release—they've lined up competitions (with trophies) for high scores and prizes like "horror themed holidays" (no clue what that might be—but it sounds cool) and shirts, artwork and other prizes. The game will also feature some downloadable extra content such as a strategy guide, music, and an 8-page comic book.
Burn, Zombie Burn! is a PlayStation Network exclusive and will be available for download on March 26th. Expect a review sometime not long after that.
I've been paying close attention to Electronic Arts' new IP, Dante's Inferno, since it was rumored a few months ago. A video game based on a classic piece of literature is intriguing enough (although I'm hoping Pride & Prejudice & Zombies never makes the jump to game-dom, even if it features Nazi zombies…), but one that's not only based on literature but set in Hell and looks like a God of War clone sets my geek-o-meter buzzing well into the red-zone.
Here's the first trailer for the game. Obviously, someone on the development team played and loved God of War—but is that a bad thing? If you're going to imitate something, you probably should imitate something really good—and it's hard to get much cooler than God of War when it comes to action games featuring giant set-pieces. The only real negative I see here is the giant multi-headed hellhound things looked cheesy to me. Maybe they'll fix them—or maybe I’ll like them more when I see them in the actual game. Too early to tell.
No word on a release date yet, but I'll keep you posted.
Capcom was nice enough to send me a note mentioning that a new Resident Evil 5 trailer was available on the press section of their site recently, so I went and grabbed it. Unfortunately, 12 drunken monkeys are probably better at figuring out most computer crap than I am. So, I had to head over to YouTube to find a version I could actually get to post on the site. Wow, a game for the Wii I'd actually play (and isn't a GameCube game or something on the virtual console). What the f**k is up with that? What's next? Original horror movies?
Anyway, Electronic Arts officially confirms Dead Space: Extraction, a Wii-based prequel to the popular survival horror game Dead Space. Even better, it's slated for release this fall. Speaking about the title this morning, VP and General Manager of EA's Redwood Studios had this to say about the game:
"We could not be more excited to extend Dead Space into an experience exclusive to the Wii. Nintendo has a wonderful history in the horror genre and we are thrilled to build on that tradition with Dead Space Extraction. As we were developing Dead Space, we realized that there was so much of the story going untold. Dead Space Extraction tells that story with all of the intensity, blood and gore that fans would expect."
Whenever I see hot American girls playing or promoting video games on the 'net, I invariably assume it’s some sort of scam. Hot American girls just don’t play video games. Sure, they might know what a video game is (in the same way they know that lesser female creatures actually have to pay for their own drinks), but it’s not from any actual experience. If through some miracle they manage to actually appear holding a controller correctly or answer a "favorite game" question with something other than Pac-Man or a Mario game, you can rest assured it’s because their handlers were on the ball.
Japan, though, that’s a whole different ballgame. When a girl like Battle Royale/Kill Bill’s Chiaki Kuriyama turns up promoting a game, I totally believe she plays games. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part, but I don't think so. I like to think it’s just one more example in the ever-expanding list of reasons why Japanese women are so much cooler than their American counterparts. I mean, aside from Megan Fox, can you think of one other hot American woman who’d spend a night gaming? I could think of dozens of famous Japanese women who would.
New York Comic Con is in full swing, and I’m still bummed that I’m not there (a golden opportunity to meet Takashi Miike has now passed me by…)
Despite that, I’m still scouring the interweb for any interesting news that happens at the show. The first really cool thing I’ve found is this trailer for the new Splatterhouse game courtesy of GameTrailers.
The game looks pretty impressive—sort of like a horrific God of War. You can see some Prince of Persia-esque platforming sequences in the trailer, as well as a ton of gruesomely imagined brawler-styled melee combat.
I’m optimistic that this game might actually be, you know, good. We’ll know for sure come April 28th, when the game debuts on the PS3 and Xbox 360 and hits retailers nationwide.
Variety is reporting that the video game version of the Saw films isn’t as dead as we thought it was.
Brash Entertainment had been originally handling Jigsaw’s first foray into the digital universe when the company abruptly closed up shop a few months back. The game appeared all but dead at that point, with the rights winding up in Lionsgate’s hands. Things have now changed though, with Lionsgate teaming up with Konami to resurrect the title. The game is still slated for a fall release (keeping it in line to appear around the same time as the sixth film in the franchise).
I wasn’t particularly interested in a Saw game prior to this point (it seems like its ripe with the potential to suck balls), but Konami stepping in gives me a slightly more positive outlook. Konami has a decent track record with horror games (they’re the guys behind Silent Hill and Castlevania) and maybe they can bring some interesting elements to the project. My area of concern, though, remains the fact that the release date is still this fall–meaning they’re probably taking what Brash had already created and just finishing the project as opposed to building a game from the ground up.
I guess we’ll all find out if the game is worth playing before the end of 2009.
Electronic Arts just keeps on trucking in its blitzkrieg-like attempt to make Dead Space into a multi-media franchise. First there was the game, then the animated film Dead Space: Downfall, then talks about a live-action feature length film, and now a comic book. I’m guessing Dead Space lunch boxes are right around the corner…
