Game Critic
Kyle Orland was born in State College, PA, but grew up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. His first experience with videogames was with Mario Bros. on his friend's Atari 7800, but it wasn't until Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) that he really became obsessed with gaming. Soon he was visiting his friend nearly every day just to play a quick game. Once he got an NES of his own, a life-long love of videogames, especially Nintendo videogames, was cemented.
While attending Montgomery Blair High School, Kyle took every computer class possible in pursuit of his dream of becoming a videogame designer/programmer. The dream got sidelined, though, when he started writing about videogames in 1996 on his own fansite, Super Mario Bros. HQ. As the site's popularity grew, Kyle's writing and opinions about videogames became more refined and less fanboy-ish (at least he likes to think so).
Today, Kyle is a senior pursuing a double degree in computer science and journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition to his duties at GameCritics he writes video game reviews for his student newspaper, The Diamondback, video game opinions for web site Joystick101, and articles that have little to do with video games for J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism. He hopes to someday write for a national video game magazine.
