Champions Online
Well...it's out.
I have no intention of buying it, not at full price at least. Anyone taking the plunge? Reports from the beta have been very meh.

Re: Champions Online
Oh, it's out already? Being a comic geek, I was interested in it (City of Heroes was the only MMO I could stick with, fantasy settings are a real-turn off for me), though I'll be missing out on it now that I swore Windows off.
A pity if it's 'meh' indeed. With the established base the dated CoH already has, I was hoping for something to draw people to something new in that setting. A pity, I like Cryptic.

Re: Champions Online
If I could afford it I'd probably run out and get it. It looks like fun and I enjoyed COH.
I know one guy who has been in since closed beta and he's really enjoyed it, although he is a COH fanboi, so his view is somewhat coloured. lol

Re: Champions Online
I don't really like the superhero genre in MMO's. Part of that is because it doesn't really fit in my opinion, as you get a virtual world filled with superhero's and no regular people. A superhero story should usually have only a few superhero's, not an entire city filled with them.
Now I personally found city of heroes dissapointing because the gameplay was boring the surrounding areas where stale and it was heavily instanced. Games that are heavily instanced like guild wars, Age of Conan and some other examples ruin the immersion in my opinion.
As far as i can tell champions online seems to be similar, so there is nothing at the moment that urges me to try out this title.

Re: Champions Online
Nor is there a free trial, which guarantees I won't go near this for the time being. Of course, free trials didn't inspire me to try AoC or WAR, so maybe that doesn't mean anything.
The only two MMO's I could see myself buying at launch, sight unseen, are Star Trek and Old Republic.

Re: Champions Online
Nope. Seems like the standard practice for MMO's now is not to start free trials for six-to-nine months after release. There's a hardcore contingent who are prepared to buy day one and it doesn't make sense to risk diluting those sales numbers. I think MMO's have exactly one shot to make a great impression right out of the gate and high opening month sales (implying a substantial player base to interact with) are a major factor.

Re: Champions Online
So... I bought the game and one week in the free month play, it has made an enemy out of me. It has a few interesting ideas (frameworks and builds instead of classes), but generally it's just a mess. It's so poor, it's mind-numbing. It's extremely hard, while it doesn't encourage either team-play or grinding, navigating to a mission is a pain, the missions are uninteresting and the content seems to run out by the time you hit level 10, since most of what you do from there on you've already done in one way or another.
Unfortunately I've prepaid for the thing for at least until January, so I'll stick around until then, but if they don't polish the damn thing, I almost hope it'll die and make room for better games.
I'm extremely disappointed with Cryptic.

Re: Champions Online
You jumped a bit too soon. There is a free weekend this weekend. Which I am playing. I don't have the time to really get into it, but the 6 hours I played yesterday were fun.
My wife is pissed at me cause she really loves the game and wants to keep playing, but we can't afford a couple of accounts right now.
The way I look at this game is that its a good casual game. Much like City of Heroes was, we had a lot of fun with it until my wife injued her arm and could not play anymore. If we could afford Champions we'd play.

Re: Champions Online
There are just so many game design faults that can drive me insane. I've mentioned this already, but the difficulty is all over the place. It doesn't seem to be an issue for all (depends on the character build, which doesn't fall easily into patterns), but for those of us that it is...
It's tedious. The game's designed so that, while there is no grinding, technically, missions are drawn out in so many ways they last longer than they should. Be it an objective that takes forever to complete or the difficulty and whatnot.

Re: Champions Online
I suppose its a lot of personal taste. I don't mind the longer missions. If you're in a good group that can be a lot of fun. Even just my wife & I its not too bad.
Its almost 9pm now and I still haven't had a chance to play at all today, I was hoping to put in a good chunk of time, but from doing yard work, and then work on a site, then having kids walk all over my lawn in search of free candy... Ugh. And a nephew is coming up tomorrow. Double Ugh.
